I was on my way out the door this morning when I checked on my geckos and found our little female leopard laying on her hammock with one eye that didn't appear quite normal. I took her out for a closer inspection, and it appears that the eyelid area has swollen a little around her eye, enough to change the shape of the eye area (more round in appearance than normal) if that makes sense. Her eye's not closed at all, but the dark inner membranes appear to have swollen up around the eyeball a bit, and she was licking it frequently.
I didn't notice any pink or red color, the eyeball itself looks perfectly normal and her pupil responds to changes in light (although the swelling does make it appear slightly smaller and receded) and there's no visible pus or goop in the eye. She had a shed problem (basically her whole face was stuck) a week and a half ago (I keep a humid hide and run a humidifier near the vivs when they're in shed, but the air's been seriously dry in our apartment due to the weather), but my husband and I both went to work on her with a wet qtip and we're pretty sure we got everything off.
Shwa (the gecko) has been wolfing down her worms with the usual enthusiasm; in fact I just fed her last night. She is approximately a year old, currently weighs 56 grams, and looks quite chubby, especially in the tail. She lives alone in a 20 gallon on reptile carpet, heated by an undertank mat and an overhead light. She has two hide boxes and a hammock that she gets to using a staircase I made out of flat rocks and aquarium sealant. She likes to climb on things and is a bit of a clutz, so I've tried to arrange her viv so that everything is relatively low to the ground. We do have a male nearby, but they've never been introduced. Her tank gets a thorough cleaning about once a month. She has developed a bad habit of using her hot hide as an outhouse, but I do my best to keep it clean.
Shwa was raised on a diet of mealworms, silkworms, superworms (which I've been feeding exclusively for about 2 months due to temporary financial constraints and the poor quality of mealworms in the area), the occasional small tomato hornworm, and the occasional butterworm treat. I've also experimented with minimealworms, phoenix worms, and dubia nymphs, but she doesn't seem to like any of those. I keep mealworms and superworms on a bed of oats and nonfat dry milk powder with cricket quencher for moisture, and I use the Repashy supplement to dust insects, occasionally swapping to pure calcium+D3 or herpvite for variety.
I plan on taking her to the local vet, but due to my crazy work schedule there's no way I can do that today. I would appreciate any advice on what to do for her in the meantime. I can try to post a few pictures later on if that would help.
