hey everyone...just a quick question. my girl is a little over 2 months old now, and i'm noticing a tail kink (or what i think is to be one) on the end of her tail.

it wasn't there when i bought her, or even a month ago so why is it developing? i've read it could be a calcium problem? i don't know if that's true, but i've been giving her calcium every day to every other day.

i've also read it could be from hatching, or a genetic thing but neither of the parents have it and if it was from hatching, wouldn't it have been there before?

here it is.

(sorry, i know the pictures aren't the best. but i hope you can still make out the end of the tail)

also, i included a pic of my male HUGE normal. i wish i had a scale to see how much he weighs!!

looks like a small tail kink, its not really anything to worry about. the other people on the forums will give you more of extended info on it

Is it possible she pinned her tail against something in her tank and broke the tip? It wouldn't be the first time I've heard of that happening.

I think the jury is out whether minor tail kinks at hatching, not afterwards, are genetic or the result of some sort of environmental or maternal factor. Maybe the incubator temperature fluctuated, maybe the mother didn't have enough nutrition, maybe the baby was positioned strangely in the egg.... it could be caused by a number of things.

hmmm...i guess anything is possible, she might have gotten it caught but she has a very simple set up for now. paper towels, gatorade caps for water, food and calcium, 2 paper towel roll hides, a coconut hide, and a moist hide.

i am/was mainly worried if it might be a calcium problem

I hope someone else may chime in on this if they have had the same experiance. I have a couple that have that same exact one kink(from different pairings). It is not the usual kinks that leos have. they are not born with it neither parent has it, it just develops at a certin age. I do not know if I can attributed it to lack of or over vitamin or calcium in take. all of my leos are raised the same in rack systems w/ same regimin. so I'd say its like 1 in 50 i've hatched divelope it.
None of the rest of either pairings hatchlings had it. just two hatchlings out of like 14 clutches.

My baby male has the same thing, I figured it was normal.

Whoo! That male looks like a Gila monster. :laugh4:

Nice geckos, though I haven't a clue about the tail. Maybe it's simply one of those "time-release" genetic traits, like the white on Lipizzaner horses or the ears on Scottish Fold cats.
