Hi,

Today my gecko lose tail and I don't know why. Gecko looks good, the tail was fat, he doesn't have problems with eating, in one word, normal and healthy gecko. He lives with clutchmate but there isn't any agression between them. Sorry that I don't use specialist terms, but I don't know this words in english. Hope everybody understand what I am asking for ;]

Hi there,

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I am will chime in, but from what you've described, there could be a few reasons.

The tail is grabbed
Illness/infection
Being bullied by tank mates
Stress/fear

Until the tail regrows, I'd switch your substrate to a paper towel flooring. This will keep loose substrate from getting into the wound. Separate this leopard from all others. Even if you don't see the bullying, it may be happening. Check the wound daily. You're looking for redness, swelling, or any other sign of infection. If these are present take your leopard to a vet immediately. And lastly, the tail is where a leopard stores excess fat. Losing their tail is not only stressful physically, but eliminates their fat reserves. Make sure you are upping your leopard's food intake during this time, but don't leave any uneaten feeders in the tank with the leopard.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

I know how to do with this gecko, but thanks :p I am experienced gecko breeder and it wasn't first time when one of my geckos lose tail.

All of my geckos are on paper. Also, I hold them in plastic box and seperate them when they growed up.

This gecko always wolf down. Once when he eat to much, he just throw up the worms. I am looking for reason because I think that wasn't a problem with stresful situation or agression from another gecko. The tail looked good, it wasn' damaged and grabbed.

Also the temperature in the box is good.

In which infections geckos can lose their tails? Any parasites?
How about geckos from professional breeders? Sometimes we can find advertisments in which breeders offers geckos after tail regeneration. Can it be normal that gecko lose its tail or is it always a reason?

Unfortunately, if you weren't there to see it happen then sometimes you have to accept that you'll probably never know. Rather than focus on the possible scenarios in which this happened, monitor the geckos behaviour, weight and eating habits and go from there.

Hi Swiechu, since you're experienced in geckos, you should know that agression could happen when you're not around. This is a risk when you put 2 geckos together; they may appear to get along fine, but who knows what'll happen when you're not watching? Perhaps the other one mistaken the tail as a big worm and took a bite? The one got spooked and dropped it?

Yep, you're right. Maybe I doesn't watching them for whole day and night, but when that happened I was at home in the same room. Unfortunately, I didn't see this situation :(, but I still thinks that wasn't agression from second gecko. They have been living in the same box since they hatched. I often go sleep late, and at this time look after my geckos. I never saw agression between them. In the another box I saw agression between differents geckos and divided them. Thanks for help :)
