How do i tame my gecko? Theres no other way of saying it but shes a pure evil b****. (sorry :()

If i go to pick her up or even open the tank she runs, attempts to bite and even hisses whilst wagging her tail. If i ever do pick her up to remove her from her cage for cleaning etc. she jumps out of my hand and escapes and hides under things and its hard to recapture her.

She's really starting to do my head in. lol. And i'm a very patient person so thats rare...
100 bites
1000 escapes
and still as untame as ever. Help?

Just force it to stay in your hand. Hold it twice a week starting off.

I disagree with Shawn here, It's not wise to "force" a gecko to do anything, for the simple fact the only way you could "force" it to stay is holding it tightly. That of which I don't condone.

My Advice, if you are feeding meal worms place one on your hand and hold you hand very still where the gecko can see it. Just keep your hand in the tank don't try to pick her up or move towards her. (you can do this with or without offering food) Let her get used to you being there then slowly pick her up (hand still in the tank about 5 inches off the ground so no harm will come if she jumps.) It will take awhile before your gecko calms down I imagine but go at it slowly or you might overwhelm her.

I agree, you should never FORCE a gecko to do anything. It just reinforces that being held is not a good thing.

I agree with Akayana. This is how I tamed Stripes, I put my hand into the hide my gecko was in every day for about 10 minutes. during the first day, he didn't touch my hand. The second, he came and sniffed my hand and licked it. He did the same on the third day. By the fifth day, he would clamber over my hand when I put it in. Now if I out it in, he will fall asleep on my hand. I hope this works for you. But then again, some geckos just don't like being handled.

I agree with Gregg...stop giving bad advice. Sheesh!

Do NOT force your gecko to be held. Unless you want a bite or a dropped tail

I have a new girl that was a rescue. She had never been handled. They even cleaned the tank around her because she would growl at them. Anyhoo, I find she's coming around for me with a bit of hand feeding and me taking the time to spend alot of time with her so she gets used to people around her.

May The Force Not Be In You

Wow Shawn, You have another
disagreeing vote about using force.
I train my geckos the same way I train a dog.
No force. Kind, gentle hand, and a treat.

Make a fist, wet your knuckle , slide it slowly with your fist
on the floor level until it touches your geckos nose.....or it strikes
your knuckle. Either way the next time it relates your touch and smell to water.
After water..can go to meal worm inners, if necessary.
Usually the water has them climbing on your hand before many
attempts. After relating this way turn the palm side up.
Slowly slide it til it wants a ride. The first couple times
don't lift it out of the habitat. When comfortable with your gecko
and you..........bring it out and directly to your body.
Lightly cup your hands to secure it until it rides surefooted
anywhere it wants to go......
No lip area. See Bonny's lip bite photo.
The amount of time to get to this point is strictly based on
your devoted time.
Take care... HJ
