Iv looked through a few threads but no one really gave a yes or no answer to whether ammonia is a good enough disinfectant or not.
I got given a really nice tank its a vivexotic wood viv with perspex not glass. and just want to know what's the strongest thing I can use that would kill most things.
ammonia was said to kill crypto in one of the threads, is this true?
I don't think there's any thing in it but I want to do every thing right before I put some one in there in a few weeks.
comments would be much appreciated :)

Thanks

I would first soak it in bleach, then rinse it REALLY well with hot water, then soak it in ammonia (which DOES kill crypto), rinse thoroughly with more hot water, then scrub it REALLY well with diluted dawn dish soap (use a toothbrush in the corners and all the nooks and crannies) rinse again with hot water, then let it air dry for at least a couple of weeks.. :) RINSE, RINSE, RINSE!!! :main_thumbsup: When I say soak I mean for like a couple of hours.

would that not make the wood warp? i know its laminated. could i not just repeat the scrub with a tooth brush and rincing over and over and over and over again?

I use chlorhexidine solution. It is a great all around cleaning product. Many vets and animal hospitals use this. However, I don't think it kills crypto. The only thing I am aware of that does is ammonia. Clorhexidine does a job on most everything else.

If you are reusing a tank which previously had an infected reptile in it i would personally throw it away and get another but thats me :)

Maybe if you still have the contact details of the previous owner they could verify for you... otherwise,I'd say it's worth it to buy a new one.
...
I only use natural products for cleaning, vinegar and boiling water but the furniture I have hadn't been used previously so its just house-keeping not deep clean.

I use vinegar or f10. I dont think the vinegar kills crypto however the f10 might. You get it through the pro exotics website. I would call and ask, it kills.just about everything else.
