Finally getting my UTH set up for my newly acquired leopard gecko. I have my UTH attached underneath the glass of my tank. I have my Herpstat probe taped inside the tank right on top of the UTH. I then have a single layer of paper towels as substrate. The problem I'm having is the Herpstat probe directly on top of the glass above the UTH is giving me a reading of 91 but the other temp probe I have taped on top of the one layer of paper towels reads 87. Can one layer of paper towels reduce the heat that much or is that merely because there is a little air space between the paper towels and the glass where my probe is? Once my gecko lies on the paper towels and makes better contact with the bottom of the tank, am I right to assume he will be feeling more of the 91 temp rather than the 87? I'm trying to decide whether I should raise the setting of my Herpstat so the probe on the paper towel reads closer to 90 but then the underneath might be more like 93/94 and what if he gets under the paper towels. I'm afraid he'll get burned. Is my current setting ok? I'm sure this is a no-brainer for everyone else but I've never owned a gecko and I'm so worried about doing something wrong. I love my little guy! I would really appreciate any help anyone can offer.
