Temp Sexing Question

Is there a certain point in the embryo's development where the temperature determines the sex? ...........or is the temp needed to be constant to determine the sex? Example: Can they be maintained at the "male" or "mixed sex temp" for a period of time, then cooled off a bit to produce females? Hope this is clear enough. Bob

After the third week, the sex is said to be determined. I'm waiting FOUR weeks, just to make sure the sex is really determined, before I move the eggs from the 82F incubator (I'm only incubating for females) to the 87F incubator for better colors. Worked very well for me so far; no losses or disabilities. Out of 238 hatchlings this year, I only hatched 7 unwanted males. That's not too many. This means that the sex was already determined in most cases when I moved the eggs into the hot incubator.

You can get perlite without fertilizer from Amazon.com. That's where I got mine. Take the natural one, without additives. I wouldn't leave the eggs in sphagnum moss; that's just for the lay box. It might get too moist and make the eggs moldy. I had bad experiences with vermiculite in the incubator, too (eggs got moldy). Perlite worked great for me. I use the Hovabator and a ThinkGeek mini fridge.

Thank you Chrissy and thanks for wishing me luck! I have no intentions of being a "breeder", but would like to at least hatch out a couple to add to my collection. I've never had trouble rehoming extra baby animals of any species, as I work with over a hundred people - many of which have kids. I'm think I'm going to leave these in the moss, but pick up some perlite to keep on hand for the next clutch. I have seen written info and youtube videos of people using sphagnum moss and having success. Thanks again! Bob
