The Internet is Made of Drama!

This is following my Thank you thread in the "all other OT posts" thread as a juxtaposition.

I'm thinking about leaving a local reptile group because of issues. The drama, OMG the drama. I asked publicly (on a facebook) if I could be a mod to help control the spam on their forums and I can't even describe what happened. It's like out of nowhere I was blindsided with hostility and anger because I haven't been in the group long enough to know XYandZ. I just want to stop the foreign viagra and porn ads. And two members seem to be at odds with each other. One even mentioned her past thoughts on suicide because of this... It's like the group just loves to argue and hate on each other. I don't get it.

There is a component of this in every group I've ever joined (eventually, anyway). GF is no exception. I don't tend to get involved in the drama unless someone is getting badly hurt and I feel I have no other option than to get involved. In general, I don't take it too seriously and stay with the group if the enjoyment outweighs the drama. I stay with GF, for example, because the enjoyment of communicating about geckos greatly outweighs the occasional annoying mudslinging. If I accidentally set off something like what you set off, depending on the specifics, I either backpedal or leave. Good luck.

Keep in mind that when we communicate in writing instead of face-to-face, it's hard to convey or pick up on voice inflections and body language. This can leave room for miscommunication. Also, many people are a lot more likely to engage in confrontation behind the safety of their computer screens and keyboards than they would in person.

Actually, because I offered my help, I got a message today from the sight admin asking if I wanted to be their spam defense admin. So that makes me happy.

I understand that the internet is full of angry people, but I guess I've been spoiled by the helpful nature of this forum. I really do want to help this group out despite its tendency toward drama. It's a local reptile group that has gatherings, fund raisers, meets at the local show, and has some interesting people in it. There are just some jerks in it too.

Oh, man do I know. Usually I can go back and read a line of posts and logically conclude what was misconstrued, but this? I still can't wrap my mind around it.
