The term ADOPTION

Alright so I being lookin around to get a beardi and put him in my current 10 gl for no more than a month while I build him a kick *** home for him.

so I am at craigslist and see adoption add for one and the dude is frickin crazy cause he's like its 100 for the fee. and I was well then you should be more clear with your add and say Bearded dragon for sale and not adoption. I Mean I would mind buy it off but the animal look pretty bad to me. in the end I didn't "Adopted him" The guy gets mad at me and tells me to f off and start cussing me out. Well I kinda got mad too and toll him he should take care of his animals better and not be a retard when posting adds.

actually I said all that cussing at him. the point is when people give a adoption notice they should put Sale instead. I mean I know some might want money for maybe taking care of the animal but if the person adopting the animal wants to and I emphasize this"GIVE HIM/HER" a Donation would be nice. So please don't ask for money Unless its a sale

i dotn know if you guys get what I am saying. but I try

I can understand what your saying. Your taking an animal off his hands he no longer wants.

But, you should have to pay a fee, he has token care of it for a long time, and he also/ possibly has to ship him too.

Now on his side, he has bought it crickets, an enclosure, lights, used water for baths, such and such, and beardies can be cricket death machines... He should justify this... by telling you so. A leo eats a few mealies a day, a beardie eats about 30 crickets a day... 1000= nothing.

Craigslist does not allow the sale of animals per its TOS. I think that is one reason there are so many adoption listings with HIGH "adoption" fees.

Exactly
They really are "For Sale" and not being put up for adoption when a really high fee is involved irregardless of how much that it has cost the person to maintain them
To me-adoption has always implied that the person wants to find them a good home for free or for a very small fee-sometimes the fee is only asked to cover an ad in the paper

just my 2 cents

I used to put animals up for adoption all the time. I used to rescue them and when they were ready to go to a good home I would put adds up. Sometimes I would but small adoption fees in the adds to weed out the animal collectors that got the animals in my care in the first place. I would then ask lots of questions and pick the person I thought would be best for the animal. I would then tell them that I really did not want an adoption fee. i was just happy to find a good home for the animal. I actually have a recent horror story about my German Shepherd but thats a really long story so I'll get into that in another thred when I have time.

As someone else said, you can't sell animals on craigslist, it's against their policy, so you HAVE to put "adoption fee".

I "adopted" my gecko from a couple off craigslist but I only had to pay $30 for him and his tank/set up

What I don't like is when they are selling horses and the "adoption" fee is like $5,000 LOL

I never thought about that. How much does it cost to ship a horse? Can't you just ride it there? lol :p

I don't see gecko's on CL to much, and when I do they usually seem to want quite a bit more then they sell for in the local ps. Now yah I know the local ps isn't the best place to buy them, but I don't know if strangers are much better (unless its a breeder). What bugs me is when they ask a rediculously high price and can't even give a description, or a picture.

I personally don't see any problem with adoption fees...it limits the possible buyers to people more likely to be decent owners. If anyone hadn't noticed, shelters charge adoption fees as well....some well over $100.

My thing is that if you are looking for a FREE animal maybe should not be looking, an adoption fee is perfectly reasonible and normal. Ive rescued many dogs and not changed adoption fees on some nad have on others, if I have it for a year and sepnd a lot on vet bills and more on feed there will be higher adoption fees than one I place in 2 months that came to me with all of its vets work done.

An adoption fee covers some or all of the previous owners expense and some to most people use that fee to insure a better home for the animal. If someone gets a pet for FREE some people think they will not take as good of care of it than if they paid $100 or $200 etc.

And unless the beardie is a hatchling I would not put it in a 10 gallon tank for a day much less til it gets a new home built.

yes if possible wait until after the house is done.
Only bad thing is when I go to alabama for the summer, my beardie is going to be in a really uncomferatable possition in a small tank for the 10 hour ride.

Why would you put it in a 10 gallon for a 10 hour drive, thats not very safe, the lid could come off or anthing, if you were to have an accident the tank could get smashed and glass go everywhere.

Why not get suitable size rubbermaid and tape the lid on for it to be safer and more comfortable?

I don't get why you couldn't look for a free animal...

I had to rehome my Pit/Boxer mix at the end of last year. I didn't charge an adoption fee because I wanted what was best for him and didn't care about any amount of "reimbursement ". Yea, we spent alot of money on him over the 3 years we had him...but as a pet owner, that's what you have to do

Like I said:

I have gotten free animals too, but that doesn't mean I was looking for a free animal or only an animal that was free.

If you want a breadie, why look for a Free one that may not have been taken care of, why not look for one from a good seller and BUY it. It sounds like they only want a FREE beardie, not one that will cost you money and trust me the small amount $100-$300 or more you may pay a good seller with good animals is way less than what proper caging, vet and feeding will cost even if the animal alone is free.

Also since your dog was rehomed, did you do a home check, get vet refernces, make sure the new-owner knew how to care for the behavior of the dog etc.?

Have you checked on it since, required the adopter to provide follow up vet bills for annual care. Do you go and see the dog to make sure he is actually well homed?

Nope. They said they wanted a pit mix to use for fighting, so I said they could have mine :main_rolleyes:

I don't mean to be rude...but I don't see how it's your place to question me on all of that. I am a resposible pet owner, and I was responsible in rehoming him

I don't see the need to argue about this subject...

When you transport an animal you may want to use a small secure thing instead of a big thing. Less chance to bash or slide into things.

I do have an problem with "excessive" adoption fees. Where it looks like someones trying to profit. It would be nice, but in the real world you typically won't make back all the food, energy, and time you spent (aka money).

The Craigs list thing seemed weird to me until I was told the adoptions are actually sales.

I was just asking, there is a lot to rehoming a dog, Ive done rescue for 22 years and Ive had people that passed the home check, vet check and seemed to be perfect adoptors then I go to do a recheck 2-3 months later and the animal is neglected so sometimes the perfect home is not just that.
