Thoughts on having a backup male?

My main project next year I have 1 male for multiple females. I have been tossing around the idea of having a back up male just in case something happens to my main male. Does anyone do this?

I think it's a good idea. There could be problems between the two, so it's a great backup idea. It doesn't hurt to do it.

Its my Super Snow Rainwater Albino. He is doing great but this will be his first year breeding and I just want to make sure my project starts off well. Of course it has to be one that was hard to find in the first place lol

If you use more than one male and he's the same as the other, you won't know which is the father. The only way to tell which one took is if it's a different morph male, that is if you decide to switch them up. Most of the time, I'll use the same pairing all season, but there have been times that I wasn't happy with the baby morph so changed it with a totally different male and produced the desired outcome toward the end of the girl's clutches. Then, some females just don't do very well their first year breeding, resulting in only a few good eggs. The only way to know it's the female is to breed with a proven male, and vice versa.

oh I wasnt planning on using multiple males just having the extra male in case the one I am planning on using has something happen or wont mate with the female etc. It will be hard to find another SSRW male so I just have to hope mine will be a good boy and do what he needs to lol

It IS a good idea. I had two male Reverse Stripe Eclipses which I bought as unsexed babies, in the hope of getting one male and one female. When they both turned out male, I thought about selling the less beautiful one several times, because I planned on breeding his little brother. As it happened, I bred the older one first, and he threw amazing Reverse Stripe babies! Then, he suddenly died of a stroke (confirmed in a necropsy). I was so happy I still had his little brother!! He continued the breeding project for me, and the babies look the same: super nice reverse striped hatchlings.

So keep a back-up male; you only need to use it in case the first one turns out infertile, gets a prolapse, is too violent towards the females, or something happens to him... of course, we all hope the first one will do a terrific job, and nothing will happen to him!!! Knock on wood three times :main_thumbsup:
