I didn't have a problem with mine, and I just went to Lowes and got 3 12" x 12" tiles for $.39 each. They gave me two free cuts which I used to make them fit in my tank. The UTH heats through my tile good enough.
I don't know how I can be more specific, because I don't remember the kind I used.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles work very well. The main thing to keep in mind when choosing a tile... avoid really glossy/smooth tiles as they don't give your leo much to grip onto, it would be kinda like living in an icerink :main_laugh: If it has any texture on it that you can feel with your hand, then it should work just fine.

The only type of tile that I would avoid, is vinyl, simply because I'm unsure as to whether or not vinyl puts off any type of chemical or odor when heated. I do believe that we have a member here that has used vinyl without any apparent negative affects, but the majority of tile users here use ceramic/porcelain.

As for UTH's and tiles, I find that the tiles regulate heat extremely well.:main_thumbsup:

i use both ceramic and vinyl and both seem ok. the vinyl doesnt give any off any fumes. i only use them in my bookshelf display though.
