I was wondering if you need to use commercial gut loads for mealworms, or if you can just let them feed on carrots for 24 hours before feeding. Thanks for looking.

It doesn't need to be commercial gut loads, you can make your own. It is beneficial to the animals eating the insects for their prey to be properly gutloaded.

I use chicken feed (actually game bird feed) (nonmedicated) from a feed store, mixed with vionate supplement and apples, oranges, carrotts, potatoes, romaine lettuce, etc. Make sure you refridgerate the chicken feed you don't use because it will grow mold if left to sit out to long.

I just got it an Expo today, so i plan to feed him on Tuesday.

The guy I buy mine from at the reptile show/expo uses a nutritious bedding so they are already gut-loaded. He suggested an occasional tiny piece of potato for water though.

this might be a silly question... but would cereal work? like multigrain cherios or something?
