So our new leo babies were delivered this morning and they were both dead. :( It appears as if they may have gotten too hot, but one was all puffed up and swollen and looked like she had blood loose in her abdomen, so I'm not really sure exactly what happened to them. What should i do with them? I tried to get in touch with the breeder but am having some difficulty so I'm not sure how to deal with this situation exactly. ........

I would stick to contacting the breeder privately. I am sure she will get back to you by the end of the day. Give her some time to respond I am sorry about your poor geckos

Oh I wasn't like trying to go behind her back or anything b/c I know that it was not her fault. She's a good lady!! :) I'm just trying to figure out what to do with them until I reach her? Should I just dispose of them or should I put them in the freezer or what?

And I know that she is very busy and I have absolutely no problem waiting until she has time. It's just, as I said, I'm not sure what to do with them in the meantime so I was hoping someone could tell me until then??

Fridge... not the freezer. Should there be any reason to have a necropsy done, the freezer will cause cells to rupture and make the process less conclusive.

Take photos and put in the freezer. It would be proper to edit your original post to remove the seller's name.

Done and done. Sorry bout that. I didn't realize that that seemed a little inappropriate until after it was brought to my attention. To be quite honest, I was kind of freaking out a little b/c I wasn't exactly prepared and had no idea how to handle the situation. .... Do I need to take like close up pictures or anything? Sorry, but I've never had to deal with this before. (lol)

Look at the terms on the seller's website. We ask that a buyer call within a specific time frame if there is any problem whatsoever. Someone must be present to sign for the shipment. Some delivery services have been known to leave a package outside, which pi**** me right off when any live shipment is involved. Animals or feeders. Gotta be there and watch for them! When that occurs it often voids a seller's live delivery guarantee.

Different dealers will have different requirements for proof. Some will take your word for it, others want photographs, some few will want the body returned or taken to a veterinarian for a necropsy. The specifics are something which should be found in the dealer's Terms of Service and/or their written guarantee or return policy. Depending on exactly what they want, different steps would be appropriate for you to take.

Communication of the issue with them and double checking to ensure you fulfilled your agreed upon responsibilities as a buyer are the first ones though.

Well, Fedex delivered it and I signed for it. I usually tell them to wait so I can open the packages in front of them to be sure, but this guy took that pen thing and ran like lightening. Thanks for helping me though!! :) I'm just trying to make sure that I do the right thing so that I am prepared for whatever she wants to do with them when I talk to her.

Thanks. :) Like I said I will talk to her about it definitely. I just wanted to make sure that the situation was handled properly in the meantime.

You can probably get the best initial idea by reading her TOS.

If she doesn't have one, whoever she may be and for whatever reason, then you seem to have taken most of the logical steps. Timely communication and refrigerating the bodies are important. You may want to take some photographs (as they are common forms of evidence) of the animals and the box, as well as collecting information from Fed-Ex which can show when the package was delivered and that it was signed for on the first delivery attempt.

I've taken pictures, put them in the fridge, and I have an emailed copy of my shipping confirmation saying that it was signed for by me and what time it was delivered, so maybe I got everything taken care of. (lol) I looked at the terms of service and it should be taken care of so I guess I'll find out when I talk to her. I just feel a little bit better now that I know what all to do.

Looks like that is all you can do until you hear back from the breeder. It's unfortunate, but it is a risk of shipping. The risk is higher during the summer months. Hopefully it all gets worked out for you.

I have no idea what the temps were from where they were shipped yesterday, but I do know that the breeder I purchased them from checks the temps before they are shipped so they had to have been okay. I know that when they were delivered this morning it was in the upper 80's. There were no cold packs in the box, but it wasn't supposed to get anywhere near this hot.

Thanks. :) I hope it does as well. As I said before, she is really nice and has been extremely helpful so I know it will all turn out okay. :)

After today, I'm seriously considering not ordering anymore geckos (babies especially) during the summer. They were so pitiful in that box, and I really don't think I could handle that again.
