A beatiful, loving American Pit Bull Terrier named Gauge was ripped from his family by a heartless person. He was shot in the neck. Today...is his day in court. As soon as I hear a verdict I will post it. The family is in court as I type this. I'm sorry if this a too sad for some to watch but it needs to be seen and heard. A while back my neighbor shot my dog with a pellet gun and I was crushed. But my dog lived. I can't imagine the pain that this family has suffered. The man who did this has not shown any remorse.

Gages Story

March 12, 2008 was a cool morning (45 degrees) as I drank my coffee on the way to work. Peaceful and calm, with what should have been a great day. The phone rang and my world exploded. My wife was babbling and screaming incoherently on the phone "Gage is dead" he has been shot. She had just watched our son bleed to death in her arms.

Where to start? Gage came into our life seven years ago. Newly married and having almost grown children from previous marriages we decided to get a dog. We were deploying overseas and I work nights mostly so I wanted a decent size dog. So Gage came into our lives. Gage was not a typical Pitt Bull. He loved every one; cats, puppies, and kids he made friends easy. He would endure great pain from a small kid and not get upset.

Gage was about two months old when we moved to the Azore Islands in Portugal. We worked hard at teaching him proper social skills. We made sure he knew what no was and always had him in large groups so he would be used to being around people. A stranger was never a stranger as long as he knew we approved. He was taught what his boundaries were, where he could and could not go. The house had a three foot high wall and didn’t have a gate at the driveway. Gage never left the yard unless he was told he could. By the time he was six months old I knew my family was safe while I was at the base.

Gage traveled the world with us, loved everywhere he went. Gage was an adopted brother to my troops and companion to my friends when they were lonely. The cable guy even loved him. He was loved by everyone who knew him except one person, my neighbor.

Ray Stanfill, the neighbor who had a tree cut across my fence and did not fix it. Ray Stanfill, the neighbor who asked for permission and I had allowed to keep his boat on my property because he did not have access to the lake. Ray Stanfill, the neighbor who asked for permission and I let build a small fishing pier on my land. Ray Stanfill, overheard by my brother in-law, taunting Gage and telling him (Gage) he was going to shoot him if he did not stop barking. Mr. Stanfill’s story for the day he murdered Gage was he had seen a snake on his property and went to get his shotgun to shoot it. Keep in mind it was 45 degrees and snakes are cold blooded. On the way to shoot the snake Gage jumped the fence into his yard and then jumped back into our yard. He thought Gage was going to jump back into his yard so he killed him. "Sorry I had to shoot your dog." In the seven years Gage was on this earth he never bit anyone, never even tried.

My wife was at the back of the house, the dogs were not barking, when she heard a loud noise come from the back yard and went to check on the dogs. The little ones, Yorkshire Terriers, were at the door nervous and scared wanting back inside, but Gage was not there. She called for him, but for the first time in his life he did not obey. He couldn’t he was dying.

Looking at the crime scene Gage was dead on our side of the fence, shot through the neck, collar blown off, and blood everywhere. He died almost instantly and bled out on the spot from a one inch hole in his neck. He was shot at close quarters; the shotgun wadding did not separate from the shot before it entered Gage. Gage was burned from the blast. The fence was not hit from the blast. The only angle the wounds could have been made were for Gage to be standing, all four paws on the ground, and Mr. Stanfill kneeling at the fence and sticking the barrel of his shotgun through the fence and firing into my yard, into Gage. There were suspicious marks on the back side of his collar that lead me to believe either before or after Mr. Stanfill shot him he tried to pull Gage over the fence. No one gets that close to an animal they are scared of, they would shoot from a distance. The Sheriff’s Office issued Mr. Stanfill a summons for Animal Cruelty and told him to get his boat and pier off my property.

The rest off the 12th was a blur spent building a coffin, digging a grave, and laying him to rest. We answered over one hundred phone calls as the word spread to former troops and friend in far off places. Everyone wanted to know what happened to the lovable goofball that was always the center of attention. There was a lot of anger and tears all over the world. A lot for a dog, especially a vicious one, but Gage was no ordinary dog. He defiantly was not vicious.

To add insult to injury, Mr. Stanfill now claims he owns the land and will not move the boat or pier from my property. The sheriff is unable to do anything about the property dispute because they cannot decide the lines without a court order. The legal deed shows none of his property comes close to the lake. If I remove the items from my property I could be at fault. He is going to tie this up in legal fees that I can’t afford.

I have warned the neighbors on the other side of Mr. Stanfill to be careful. He has complained about their dogs as well. They said they have had numerous run-ins with him about their dogs.

I want him to pay for what he has done to Gage and my family. Don’t take that the wrong way I don’t want money just justice. My kids can’t sleep and my wife is a mess. My children want to move and I may have to get them counseling. What was a home is now a scary nightmare. If he will do this to an animal what would stop him from doing it to a human or child he does not like.

This morning I watched my wife let the little ones out and saw her cry at Gage’s grave. I stood there watching the scene from the backdoor not sure if they were safe to be out there. Worried about what might happen. No one should have to live this way. No one should have to die the way Gage did.

I hope that evil man get what he deserves. That's absolutely (messed) up. Pardon my language, there's nothing else strong enough to describe it. :(

I hate stupid people.....

The only qualm I have with that whole thing is the claim that Gage was not a typical pitt bull.....sounds like he was VERY typical for a well raised pitt....a goofy, fun loving, people loving dog.

The man who did this is a horrible, horrible person!...I hope they give him whatever the maximum punishment is.

Let me clear up that this is not my dog. He belongs to a woman named Shana. She lives here in Louisiana.

This is her myspace. We still have not heard a verdict.

Also helping Gauge's family is this wonderful woman Sherry. She is a great person and is helping to spread awareness about animal cruelty. She is who will be updating us about court today.

I agree. My pit bull is just like gauge. Goofy, loving, funny, loyal. I think people let the media hype run how they think about everything including these dogs. People meet my dog and say "oh he can't be pure bred because he isn't growling at me" when actually the pit bull mixes are responible for attacking people. But if they look somewhat like a pit bull then the media doesn't even say mix.

I have to admit one point I was caught up in all the media hype. I believed pit bulls where mean vicious animals. Then I volunteered at an animal shelter, and got to be around more pit bulls, and came to recognize that I actually thought the pits where friendlier and better mannered than the labs, and retrievers. This is something I would have never have realized if I didn’t volunteer at that shelter, which makes me glad I did.

I do have to say I think for crimes such as these, that people should go to prison. I understand the killing an animal isn’t as punishable as killing a human, nor do I think it should be, put if you commit a serious crime like this, you should get a serious punishment. What would happen if that shot did hit a human? His mind has already taken the step to cold blooded killing, so next time it will be easier, without a harsh punishment, there isn’t much standing in his way of doing it again.

So court is over for today and they have a verdict but it can't be released until tomorrow. They are under a "gag" order until the verdict is released. I am so anxious. I just want to here "guilty!"

That really tugs at my heart, beacuse I had a pit/bull growing up that saved me from a rabid dog, good old Goat. I had just written a long piece about chemicals and metal corrosion, but in the long run that would solve nothing for you. I hope the verdict brings about justice for you, but I know it will never bring you solice. I do hope that you can look to your wonderful memories of your beloved family member and find them filled with pride and happiness.
Thinking of your family,
Brent and Julie

Gage's Killer....Ray Stanfill was found GUILTY today! He still has to be sentenced but this is a huge step in the right direction. I think this case brought attention to how serious animal cruelty is.

GREAT news! It's only been in the last couple of years that courts have been able to prosecute and actually have substantial punishment for animal cruelty. I hope the legal system continues in that direction. Who knows, maybe one day they're will be justice for people who commit cruelty against reptiles.

I'll need to check but I think there was a snake found nailed to a pole or something and the person who did it went to jail. People are starting to see that most violent people start off killing or hurting animals. Look at Jeffrey Dahmer.

this is the article. I thought they found the person but the are offering a reward.

Snake Discovered Nailed to a Telephone Pole
Massachusetts: A snake is now in the care of Angell Memorial Animal Medical Center after being rescued from being nailed to a telephone pole on Wednesday morning. The 2-foot python had been nailed to the pole with six roofing nails.

According to veterinarians no damage was done to his internal organs. He has been dubbed Trent and is reportedly a gentle and social reptile. A $500 reward is offered for information resulting in the capture of his tormentors.

"People seem to think that animals don't feel pain. They absolutely do, and snakes are no different," said the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Brian Adams.

Reptiles are my hobby, but working with dogs has been my living for over 30 years now. The sad thing about pitties is that IF they do bite the damage can be much more serious than many other breeds. The good news is that in all my years I've only personally known of one pit attack on humans, in that case both of the dogs owned by the owner were shot by the police in a very legitimate stand off.

I have had people call my shop and disguise the breed of their dog fearing that I wouldn't welcome them into my shop. When they walk in, I go.. "That's a Pittie!! I love those guys, don't have to worry about how he/she will be treated here!" Pits are truly an incredible breed and in the hands of a decent owner are wonderful family dogs!! Just as good if not better than any lab or golden if you ask me!!

I'm glad there was a favorable decision in this case for Gage, he deserves to have a good legacy to pass on.

OMG, this has to be the saddest thread that i have read in a long time, but on the other hand I am so happy that he got found guilty. I have been around SOOO many Pit Bulls, and all of them are just the best dogs, just happy to be alive, and just wanting to be loved and around their families. They really are good dogs. Yes, there are some bad Pit Bulls, but it isn't the Breed to blame, because there are also bad Labs, or bad Golden Retrievers, etc.

It seriously breaks my heart when Abbie and I (Abbie is my 100% Pit Bull Terrier) go walking and she is wagging her tail, smiling away, and certain people will literally jump out of her way. One guy, a grown man, actually almost fell over trying to get away from her. I used to just ignore it, but I can't anymore, you can see it in Abbie's face that it makes her sad when people run from her, because she loves it when people pet her, she gets so happy. I say stuff to the people now, nothing too rude, I just let them know how ignorant they are being.

She loves all the dogs in the complex, especially the puppies (Unless they try to touch her toys, then she gets a little angry, but I always let the dog owners know to not let their dogs touch her toys ahead of time).

I couldn't imagine how I would feel if someone hurt Abbie, It would totally break my heart. I Love her like a child!
