I thought I'd get your opinions. My husband last night is telling me that Bert is too fat. He says I have an obese gecko. What is your opinion?

He looks fine to me. One way you can tell if they are getting too fat is if they develop "armpit bubbles". So bubbles in their armpit areas, lol.

My husbands comment was that his belly is big. What do you think?

Also, this gecko is less than a year old (I don't know exact hatch date) and he is at 75 grams in weight as of last night. Length is about 9 inches. Does this seem right? I started weighing/measuring him on October 12 (a little over 2 months ago), at which point he was 34 grams and probably about 6.5 to 7inches. So all I can do is guess at age really.

Years ago when I had leo's I had mostly females and only two males. Those two males were never as large as this guy I don't think.

No, I wouldn't say he's too fat. If he can still move about with no issues, and he can hold himself up off the ground (without his belly dragging), then I'd say he's just a hefty boy. :)

What do you feed him and how often?

Does he have any Giant in his genes? Those who do tend to grow a lot faster than those without. His size and weight could be indicative of this if you don't know for sure.

I have a 1.5 yr old 90g+ girl with a belly that I inquired about on one of my local forums, and was advised by several breeders and a vet assistant that she looked just fine. If I was concerned, I could cut back on feedings (I only feed her every 3 days instead of 2 now) and ensure I'm keeping the fat content of her food low (only feeding crickets and kingworms, as usual, and ensuring I'm not feeding butterworms, waxworms, or hornworms which bulk up geckos) as well as giving her plenty of exercise (I take her out daily for about 15-20 minutes for a run around my room).

Ok, well it's very helpful to hear that you all think he's fine. I don't know if he has any giant in his genes. Unfortunately, he was originally a pet store gecko. So age is just an educated guess, and genetics are unknown. As I said, he was 34 grams and about 6.5 inches long on October 12. So I'm thinking maybe about 6 months old at that time?? If my guesstimate is right, that would put him at about 8 months now. I would think if he had giant genes he would be longer than 9 inches, wouldn't he?

And yes, I'm sure I've been feeding him too much. When I got him (end of September) he was in that stage where everytime I walked into the reptile room he was coming to the front of his cage begging for food. With his young age and fast growing stage I was of course feeding him daily and I have continued with that since. His eagerness to feed daily has definetely gone done in the last couple of weeks though (never refusing to feed, just not as eager). I did not feed him yesterday. Today he seems to be very interested in food again. :)
