Hi everyone

I just bought a 2 week old tremper albino. I have an adult but have never had a hatchling tremper. I trust the person I bought him from but am a bit confused! Can you please put my heart at rest as I was expecting it to look more "albino"! Is this what a tremper hatchling should look like?

The eye is lighter than my non albino hatchlings but not red.

Thanks for looking.

Well, it looks like you have what we call here in the USA... a "Dookie"!!! Sometimes Tremper albinos are very brown, especially females incubated at low temperatures.

I agree, and from the head shot I can tell that it is a dookie. (They are also called chocolate albinos too.) The dark color is a deep deep brown. Ask the breeder what temperature and how long the egg was incubated.

Don'y feel bad. I was all perplexed when I hatched the first one like that from a tremper X tremper ;)

Thanks Marcia, Okapi and Paul for your quick responses. I appreciate it. So I have a Dookie! That's great. I will ask him about the incubation temp and duration. Its supposed to be a male though!

You bought it sight unseen?

The breeder may have used the same incubator for males and then switched over to incubating for females after a point. So it may very well have been temp sexed for male before the temps in the incubator were dropped down low.

I did buy it without seeing him as I have bought from this guy before and I know he's to be trusted.

You have a very good point. Either way, the little guy has stolen my heart!

I had 2 albinos hatch out from two hets and at first they were dark like that so I wasn't completely sure they were albinos. I kept looking at their eyes and they didn't look albino-like either. They have lightened up considerably and now have albino eyes

There are actually two reasons for "darkened" Tremper Albinos, so the sex and incubation temps don`t matter much. They can turn out darker than normal from lower temp incubation, OR they can "cool" themselves once they have hatched. The latter can happen anytime after the gecko hatches, up to several months of age, to a year later.

Also temp sexing is not 100% accurate, so it could be a male either way, and was just exposed to temps below 86dg. :main_yes:
