Trying to Breed

Hello, I am new to breeding Leopard Geckos, however, I have had leopard geckos for 4 years.

I have 2 female leopard geckos and 1 male Blizzard Leopard gecko. The females are 10 and 5. The Male is 3. I have never bred any of them before. I keep the females in one tank and the male in another.

One week ago today, I put one female in the with the male to see what happened. Immediately, the male bit the female's neck and the breeding began. It lasted a whole 30 seconds and I was amazed that it not only happened, but I got to see it!

I have been researching breeding geckos like crazy. So I put the female back in with the male to see if they would mate again because I wanted them to have many clutches. Well this time the male seemed afraid of the female and ran from her. I let them spend the night together though.

The next day, the tip of the male's tale was black and he had scratches on his head. I immediately removed the female and haven't put them together since. I am just wondering what happened. I'm guessing the female attacked the male but can't figure out why if they'd already bred.

Thanks for reading my mini novel and any answers would be greatly appreciated.

First off, I wouldn't recommend breeding a 10 year old female leo. For one thing, she's past fertility so you're not going to get many clutches from her(if any) and for another, breeding a female virgin that old can be hazardous to her health. Older females who have never been bred may have trouble passing eggs, leading to egg binding and potentially surgery. The 5 year old should be ok, but is a little past her prime.

As to why the female attacked the male(and I'm willing to bet she did) she's most likely not receptive at this time. Just because she accepted him once doesn't necessarily mean she will again. Is she ovulating? You only need one successful mating to get fertile eggs, so re pairing them may not be necessary anyways. Always supervise introductions and if the female rejects the male, remove him.

Before you jump into breeding just be sure to ask yourself a few key questions: Are you capable of keeping and caring for all the hatchlings? Female leos can lay over 16 eggs, that's a lot of mouths to feed. And in all honesty you may have trouble finding homes for those you don't want to keep, Normals het Blizzard(what the babies would be) aren't particularly high in demand so think carefully about what your plans are. You also should consider the fact that you should have an incubator, incubation medium, and housing available for all the babies before you breed. Not trying to disuade you, just be sure you know what you're getting into. And research is key. Be sure to use all resources available to you(this forum is excellent) and understand all the aspects of breeding, the good and the bad, before you breed.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response. That's good to know. It wasn't the 10 year old that I bred. It was the 5 year old. This is something I've wanted to do for awhile and I am aware of how many babies can be produced. I have 4 other tanks already and I will be getting the necessary incubator for the eggs. I am going to read this forum and get all the information I need. It's funny all the people who say they will buy a gecko from you...and then you tell them the geckos mated and all of a sudden they don't want them! I am prepared to keep them all if I have to. I LOVE geckos!
