Unethical Breeding?

Maybe it's becasue I'm new to Leopards but how is it unethical to breed differant morphs? I see people tripping out becasue "It's unethical!" but how is it? Maybe it's odd but like me, I would like to breed. I've done the research and can handle it but I could only breed with what I could afford to buy. So what if I got a blizzaard female and a Tangerine male or something like that? does it cause some genetic deformitys or something because if so then I'm sorry I wasted your time reading this but otherwise who cares if differant morphs breed, It shouldn't be so much about a certian morph or making money breeding. It should be about fun (Responsibly of course) and the Miracle of life, not money.

There have been a number of posts about breeding and ethics, but they have been much more specific than "breeding different morphs". After all, breeding morphs is really what leopard gecko breeding is all about for many people, and people have their individual "breeding projects" that we support and encourage. The two issues that have surfaced lately (that I can think of) are very specific: breeding different strains of albino together so it becomes impossible to tell which strain is being expressed, and breeding large numbers of an expensive morph (often of inferior quality) and then unloading them on the market at very low prices. It's true that this is about "breeding morphs", in the same way that throwing a baseball game is about "playing sports".

Outside of breeding different albino types together, there should not be a problem for you. Don't let everyone else think for you. If you want to breed a blizzard and a tang, you can and you should, assuming you have options available for the offspring.

As for the expensive morph flooding the markets, well, people are just pissed off more because of their own money/business/investment being threatened than it being due to a genuine ethical argument. Lots of people claim they're only in it for the love of the geckos out of one side of their mouths and then cry about the loss of value and/or poor demand for various morphs out of the other.

I don't mind so much either way. This is my second year doing this and I broke even the first year just by shuffling project individual odds-and-ends around and refining my groups. This year should be better, market glut or not. If not, so what? I'll just reduce to the most bare core groups of projects I find interesting. I can get it down to the point where just having my higher-end pets reproduce generates a small degree of profit. Or selling a gecko someone else wants at the correct time.

Enough of that blather, though. Just do what you want and keep good records. Give your customers the information they need to make informed decisions and then leave it be.
