Hello, I just found this message board. My 5 y/o son purchased a leopard gecko "Anakin" (he's a big Star Wars fan) yesterday, and we're not too familiar with the many morphs. I just took a picture of her (I think it's a she at this point), while cleaning the cage prior to feeding. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much. I thought that might be what it was but really wasn't sure. Couldn't really understand the guy at the store when he made a comment on what it was.

A few months ago he started getting "lumps" around his boy parts and we took him to the reptile vet and they took care of it and gave us some medicine. Thought everything was fine, but then he started dragging himself, and we noticed it again. He broke it himself and we gave some of the medicine from before, but then noticed he stopped eating and wouldn't open his eyes.

Really not sure, questioning everything we had done, red lights, didn't turn them off at night, fed almost only crickets, maybe we didn't gut load them properly, was the cage too dirty. Unfortunately, not sure what else would have happened, vet told us last time it would likely happen again.

My 8 y/o son was pretty sad, our 5 y/o doesn't really understand. He still thinks Anakin crawled outside and went under a rock (where our 8 y/o buried him) and flew in a spaceship to the moon and will be back tomorrow (I guess his interpretation of his big brother telling him Anakin died and went to heaven). He finally has stopped telling us to clean out Anakin's cage because he's coming back.

Sorry to hear about your little leo. There is some great advice on here, so don't be afraid to ask around. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about husbandry.. :)

I'm sorry to hear that. Was he getting a calcium plus D3 supplement?

I wasn't the main care provider, but when I did feed, I made sure to dust the crickets every few days, sometimes with sometimes without D3. He also had a bowl in his cage at all times, but I personally never saw him partake of that, of course I only saw him drink water a few times.

Does what I described sound like something that may be the result of lack of D3?

Oh, I dunno. It was just a question because it's a pretty common mistake people make with leos.

The only way you'd ever really know is if a vet did an autopsy.

I just felt awful about it all, thinking it must be something we did, because of the average lifespan of leos vs our approx. 3 years.

Hm. Well did you ever post a pic of your setup? And what did the vets say it was the first time when they gave you the medicine?

My wife just said a "growth". We were given Baytril and Thermazene. As for setup, don't believe we took a pic and it is full of lights, etc now. What we had was two sets of double lights which you can switch back and forth. We had a blue day light and a red night light. Our temps were pretty good with these. It's a 20-gallon aquarium. I used aquarium sealant to grout slate tiles for the floor. We tried an under tank heater at first, but weren't able to ge todo temps. Had a hot hide, a hot humid hide and a cool hide. And had a water dish and a bowl of calcium.

I'm very sorry for your loss. :(

Honestly, I'm as stumped as everyone else. As mentioned above, I don't think without an autopsy you'll know exactly what happened.
