I finally got access to my picture of my second level which came out surprisingly well. In the picture you can see 3 of the 4 red ceramic legs (I made them at the pottery studio, but you can use thick dowels just as well) which are probably about 6" tall. On top of them are the 2 12"x12" tiles (side view) which are separated by small tile spacers. The mini UTH is in between them. Above is my magnetic rock hide (right on top of the UTH) for my hermit gecko and sunbathing next to that is Saffron, my redstripe x albino male. As you can see, I have room below the second story for 2 hides. If you make the upstairs too low, you'll have a hard time accessing or moving the hides. Sometimes I do have to lift them up to move wandering superworms or check on geckos. You can also see my home made landscape backgrounds behind the cage, the worm dish (with the mealworm etched on it --look carefully) that I made in pottery, the hide that I made from a gourd I grew, the edge of my lay box, the branch behind it that the geckos use to climb up to the second story and the edge of the hammock on the cool side. Let me know if you have any questions.

Aliza, Thank you! I've been waiting for that pic lol. I really like how you did that and I hope to do that when I switch to the larger tank (Which cracked when I was cleaning it :furious3: ). Thanks again, looks great!

Aliza thanks for the pic! Great plan. I hope to be doing something like that in the next month or so.

Scott (I always assume I'm talking to Scott--is that true?) Sorry to hear about the crack! Could you create a fake wall or maybe use tile on the cracked side?

This is an old thread I'm reviving, but I've posted a few times about my upstairs level in my 20L tank, so I thought I'd show it again. Also, I realized at the beginning of the season that just because my warm side is where it is at the bottom of the tank, the upstairs, which is heated, doesn't have to be on the same side. I've moved it to the other side which means that I no longer have to reach under the second story to get at the hides. The heat at the top level doesn't interfere with the cool side beneath it.

I did think about that problem when I set up the upstairs. What doesn't show in the picture is that there's a lay box on the bottom level just in front of the upstairs. THey can get up and down either by climbing up the branch or using the laybox. There's less than a 4" drop from the top to the laybox. Although I suppose there's some chance of an injury, I think it's less likely with the laybox there. I've had the setup for more than a year and no one has come to grief. I wouldn't put juveniles in that setup, only adults.
