Most Uromastyx looks like that to me. Just make sure he has a water bowl at all time, as he could be dehydrated. But I think he is fine.

he is now off of the sand and on white proso millet.

Also I would make sure he is off all lose substance; switch him to tile or something.

do not provide a water dish for a mali uromastyx like what you have just that little amount of moisture can raise the humidity to unsuitable levels and could cause tail rot or a reprtory infection

You can keep uros on loose substrate to, millet is great because it is edible and some people actually sprinkle it on there food.

Hi there, sorry to hijack your thread but I was wondering do you find Mali Uromastyx hard to keep?
Also is it right that they get like 12-14 inches, which is a bit bigger than a leopardgecko?
Thanks in advance :)

Hi, lode, some people find them a little harder to keep then most. They are very hard to breed and are more of a display animal, not big on handling despite some people. they get about 12 to 16 in. They get very big bodied.

More of a display animal? Really? I thought they really "liked" handling as far as that goes ofcourse.
Are they harder than beardies?

I like mali's but they are expensive.
The local store here sells them for $500
I have handled a few, it is just like a beardie but with a beardie you can stroke and play more.
They are much more reserved and "serious" than a beardie.

Oh oké, that's interesting thank you.
So are they harder than a beardie?
If they are that expensive here then I will have to close the option untill I start making money, am going to petstore soon so I'll know in a few days.

The whole handling thing is sort of a myth. If you go on repticzone's uro forum most people will tell you to hold your uro rarely. They may be docile( mine isnt lol) but they do not like handling. To much can stress them. As for price...petsmart is over charging. At the shows i see them for 40 to 60 bucks.

Oh I know they over charge, just like on all their animlas, that was just in response to someone saying they go for $500 around them.

i bought him for $35 at the repticon show in sc and as far as handling any time that i open his enclosure he comes right for me trying to climb my arms i can lie down on the bed with him and put him on one side and he will come to me over and over the only thing i have found that is hard is keeping the temps so high because he is in our room and it does make it hotter in here

Its not petsmart its a local store called Arizona reptile co, and its a full grown breeding pair.
I have never seen another uromastyx in AZ.

And as for overcharging, I may be defensive because I do work for petsmart, but as a CHAIN CORPORATE store (not as a private specialized store or breeder) we are the best, and if you don't' want to pay the extra go to petco. Your cheapness is obvious in the pets health.

I understand being a chain store they generally have to charge more than say I breeder would, I was just saying they overcharge as oppossed to breeders. If you are getting your animal from a petstore I agree Petsmart is the best, and that's where I get any animals I get from petstores.
