Using heat lamp through glass?

I want to get a pair tokay's(There is no real tokay section and this question does kind of apply to leo's) but don't feel like paying $250 for a big enough exo terra tank with the mesh top. Can you use heat lamps through glass? What other options would I have? Thanks.

The heat might crack the glass? Maybe?
I've never done it, I don't think you'll get the temps you want - either too cold or too hot. You might cook the geckos! lol.
