I use perlite works great for me. I dont measure just guess and it has worked great. I just put enough water in there that the bottom has a bit of water when i tip the container, but no more then that and no less. I do have a few holes in my containers very small. hope that helps. when the eggs hatch i just put the perlite in one of my plant containers so at least it gets used.
You can get either vermiculite or perlite from a home improvement or garden store. As far as what to use, people use both so it's up to you. Many people use Albey's method with perlite which seems as if it would be more reliable since it depends on measuring and weighing. It can be found here: http://www.albeysreptiles.com/incubate-eggs.htm
Thanks for posting the link Aliza. I was looking for it earlier to share on Mike's other thread. We use that method, and we have not had any eggs get moldy or anything. Ryan takes care of a weekly air exchange, and we should be getting our first hatchlings any day now.
Air exchange--Open the sealed container once a week for a few seconds to let fresh air in, and check for any egg damage (mold, dents, etc...).
i found miracle grow perlite that had plant food in it - read a bunch - some say its bad some say its good - couldn't find any different - any brands to go with? i'm trying to do whats right -
i use perlite, from the nursery, bit more than others pay was 9.99 for a i'd say medium size bag, i would stay away from ones with miracle grow in it, hatchrite is in essence, pre moistened perlite so you dont have to add water or anythign to it, it's already done.
location: i went to a plant nursery, if you can't find one i believe home depot / lowes etc. would have it better than ace or walmart etc.. but if you can't find it i would def. calla few nursery's it's their territory and they'd atleast tell you where u can get it... push comes to shove order online.
