Today I "adopted" 3 new guys.. They were in less than perfect housing. I originally thought the stench they brought was from their tank/soiled repti carpet. After getting home I moved them temporarily to a 116 quart rubbermaid tub with a few lamps, lots of hide, water dishes, mealworms. I also transferred a large foam hide they had in their original enclosure.
I VERY quickly discovered that it is the foam itself that stinks the worst. (The tank and repti carpet were easily fixed with a heavy cleaning in the tub.) Two of the geckos are happily enjoying the rest of the fun clean house, but one girl is very attached to this hide. I don't want to stress her out further, but I'd like to remove the hide and clean it, if possible. The foam is cut to resemble rock and has some sort of paint on it. I don't care about ruining the paint job if this thing can be cleaned and made safe for the geckos. I do have some repticide on hand, and a large bath tub if soaking is necessary.
Does anyone have any input on this?
Also, the geckos were housed in a 20 gallon tall tank. I have posted on craigslist looking for an upgrade as I'd like them to enjoy more room. The 116 quart tub they are in now is QUITE spacious, however the temps are not where I'd like them to be. Can you use a UTH with a plastic tub? I would not affix it, as eventually I'd want to use it on the tank I purchase. Any cheap online resources for herp supplies would be awesome as well. I really wanted these geckos to have a nicer home so I 'adopted' them, but it's the end of the month and a lot of bills are due!
Sorry this got so long... Thank you all in advance.
