Wasnt expecting this....

I bought a Mack Snow female a month ago. She is a small little girl. Wasnt expecting her to breed for awhile. Guess she really likes my Tremper Albino male. This morning she laid three eggs. Im not familiar with all the breeding aspects so from what I understand I will get Mack Snows het for albinos.

Is there any concerns due to her young age? I hope she is not in any danger. Any input would be appreciated.

how much does she weight and yea you would get some 100 percent hets but if she is really small take her out of the cage with them male and house in her own cage or they will keep breeding

How little/young is she? Her weight is of more importance than her age, for the most part. The safest weight to breed is 50-55 grams. Some people have bred at 45 grams with no problems, but once you get smaller than that, it can REALLY hurt the female. Same goes for a male that is bred too small.. The geckos will breed when a male and female are put together, even when they aren't really ready to.

And wow, she laid 3 eggs, huh? That's interesting, they usually only lay 2 at a time, and first-year breeding females often only lay 1 egg their very first time.

I hope she wasn't too young/small as well.. can you post any pics?

and Mack Snow X Tremper =
50% Mack Snows
50% normals

all babies 100% het. for Tremper albinos

I agree with Tanner, you should definitely seperate the male and female!!

Yeah, if she weight 45 grams or more, she is fine. I have had a smaller female (about 25 grams) lay eggs, even when not bred. She seemed to be fine, and has shown no signs of injuring, and that was about 2 months ago. I doubt there is anything wrong with yours, as mine didn’t seem to have any negative consequences for laying that young, although I don’t support breeding geckos that little.

Can you explain how I would get normals if I dont start with any normals? Im not arguing with you, Im trying to learn. :)

The easiest way to explain this is by using Punnett square. They don’t load onto this format very well, but if you want to PM your e-mail, I can show you there. It is really very simple to understand. I’ll just e-mail you the genetics page I have written (this still has a few errors in it, but I think you will get it for the most part), and then explain your pairing.

Thanks for that Nicholas :)
My best explanation is just that the Mack Snow is co-dom, it only dominates half of the time. You do not have any "normals" but you have a "normal albino" (not mixed with any other traits), and the albino genes won't be visible in the first generation offspring. Does that make sense?

And as far as breeding too young, I have heard many stories of females dying from it. Sometimes, also males dying from it. However, Nicholas said that he didn't have any problems. So as you can see, it can really go both ways, not too much is black and white in the gecko world. BUT most people would NOT support breeding geckos at a very young size/age, as Nick said.

Do you have any means of weighing her and can you post some pics?

She weighed in at 36 grams.

She is eating more than she usually has and is drinking water. She seems to be fine.

Edit: I just wanted to point out I was not trying to breed them yet. My male is only 50 grams and my other female is 48. I did not think any of them would be interestd in breeding since they are juvies. I will have to relocate the male Im thinking.

Ohh. I get it. I was not aware Mack Snow was co-dom. I get that.

Well to be 36 grams AFTER laying three eggs is actually not too bad, IMO. She should and hopefully will recover just fine.

I think relocating the male would be a great idea :main_yes: And again, having three eggs is pretty amazing as well!

I got home late from class last night and will take pics tonight as I have no class. She laid one egg in the morning (or the previous night, Im not sure) and then the other two a couple hours later. The first egg that was laid is larger than the two eggs laid later. The first egg is had a small dent in it, but when put in an incubator with moisture swelled back up nicely. The first egg also has a couple of polka dots on it. The other two eggs are the same size and look to be the usual size for Leo eggs from what I can see online. My wife's reading online has us guessing the eggs will hatch in around 65 days..64 now because Im counting. :)

My wife is bummed because she will be in Vegas on business during the scheduled hatching time. lol.

What temp are you incubating at?

I know EXACTLY how she feels. I was out of state when our first Super Snow hatched, had to wait a whole week, and it drove me crazy!

Im incubating at 81 degrees as I want females. I have a tupperware container filled with moist vermiculite sitting in their cage at around the 81 degree part of the gradient. Im going to buy an incubator next week. Like I said, this was a surprise and the incubator was going to be for the future. lol.
