Water balloon egg

My MS female laid two eggs in her lay box. One is large and very water balloon feeling and the other one is deflated. They are on vermiculite in the incubator right now at 83 degrees. Are they fertile? I know with crested geckos, if the egg isn't hard, it usually isn't fertile, but these are my first leo eggs. I candled them, and they are just yellow.

If they aren't fertile, should I reintroduce the male to the female?

Thanks for your help

I would incubate the eggs anyway until they completly collapse or start to mold.

You will want to reintroduce the male to the female again. I would leave them together if they get along OK, or at the minimium leave the male and female together a couple of days before seperating. This should be done weekly.

Thank you.

I would have kept the male in with the female for a while, but she beat him up pretty good. So I separated, gave both some time to heal, and figured I'll reintroduce in a few weeks. Both have healed and I'll reintroduce tonight.

Is it your females first time laying? Sometimes their first clutch are dud eggs. Incubate them anyways, they normaly harden within the day. Make sure your female has enough calcium so the egg shells arent too thin.

Checked the eggs again today. One is very flimsy and feels like a water balloon. The other one has hardened up some to feel like a stale marshmallow, but has no veins. Should I continue to incubate the firm egg?

If you have the space in the incubator why not just keep them both going for a while and see what comes of it? It could (in the long run) be a very good educational experience at the very least.

The really deflated egg was molding today and the other one was looking a little funky too, with no red or veins inside. I decided to just take them out. Hopefully her next batch will be good. My tegu enjoyed the duds though ;)

Awww that's too bad... well at least now you know how they can present and predict ahead of time which are worth attempting to incubate and which to just let go... I would still freeze them first before throwing them away just in case.

It is generally suggested you freeze any eggs you don't plan on incubating before throwing them away just to make certain there is no developing enbryo that you might have missed despite doing candling etc. This way they don't develop or incubate in the fermenting warmth of a trash pile somewherein the middle of nowhere.

Dog shrink, thank you. I never thought of that. Our land fill is in a place where they may live. I will spread that word around. I myself freeze the eggs and cast them in bronze.

maybe one more suggestion...don't do too much egg squeezing! :) Don't worry about the feel of the eggs..just get them in the bator with as little disturbance as possible..and the least amount of pressure to the egg...all that "feelin" could be causing issues! Good luck with the next clutch!!..

Also if you got mold on your egg already maybe you have too much moisture in your incubating matter. My first clutch was in the bator for 56 days...one hatched and the other I froze because finally when the clutchmate hatched I candled the egg and it was still neon green. But it never got mold on it in 56 days. Just a thought.
