Have you contacted who you're getting the animal from for advice?

I use a halogen "puck" light (looks like a hockey puck and usually gets installed under upper kitchen cabinets to provide downward facing light) which is either 10 or 20 watt (can't remember; too tired to look) as a basking spot for both of my day geckos, one of which is a gold dust day gecko. I recommend you get and read "Day Geckos in Captivity" by Leann and Greg Christenson (www.livingartpublishing.com). She has an extensive discussion about maintaining day geckos either with or without UV lighting. I have maintained my g.d. day gecko without UV light (appropriate supplementation is discussed in her book) for over 2 years with excellent results. I also recommend checking out http://www.phelsumaweb.com/eng/. Leann posts on this forum and it has excellent information.

The florescent light won't be hot enough for basking. FLorescents don't really give off heat. You really need both a florescent light for day light and color and a hotter light for basking.

Not entirely true. I use spiral compact fluorescents for basking spots and I use power compact lighting (approx. bent T-5's) as well. Ever take a thermogun to a solid point under a fluro light? And I'm just talking about the 13watters...Really depends on the species, but for anything other than barbouri, breviceps and standingi, a well-placed fluoro compact can get the job done. I have used both combinations (fluoro general light and halogen spot/fluoro general light and fluoro spot) for quite some time and haven't had problems with temps...
