So, this is not gecko related but I need everyones prayers and good vibes.

My mom just called and said she couldn't get our dog shelbey off the floor. She is about 8 years old and is such a love. She has a fatty tumor on her chest and the vet said it shouldn't bother her so we didn't have it removed. Well, I thought it looked like it was growing and yesterday, I thought Shelbey looked like she wasn't as chunky as normal.

So, the dog is panting hard, in obvious pain, and won't get up...This is very sad since we had to put our other dog, Nala, down last summer. She's on her way to the vet right now with her. So, please pray or what ever you want to do to send good wishes and vibes our way.

Thanks everyone.

Oh Mallorie
Shelby will be in my prayers
I sure hope that she improves

I very much understand what you are going through-I just went to the vet today (the one that was closed for 2 months because of the flood here) and got Sheba's original medication and I start her back on it tonight

I am scared to death that we are close to losing her and have been praying like crazy and it will be easy to include Shelby in my prayers

Take care of yourself
Sandy

I will pray for your Shelbey as well. A fatty tumor shouldn't really be a problem, but it sounds like it could be something else. I've been through a lot in the last 6 months with my 11 yr old Siberian Husky, Melani, who had a grapefruit sized benign adenoma removed from her liver. She has smaller ones which are growing on there, and the latest ultrasound showed that parts of her liver are looking more cyst like. She's doing great though, so I just make sure she enjoys every day. Best of luck to your mom and her dog.

If it's a tumor that's just under the skin and can be palpated, there is a product made in Montana called Neoplasene, also known as black salve. It can work miracles when injected into some growths, as long as it's not in an internal organ.

THanks all! I am just worried that the vet was wrong in saying it was a fatty tumor. I don't think he did any tests on it to even check. Sometimes vets think they are so good they don't need to check...I've seen in with our equine vet a few times....

Anyway. I am worried it is in her heart or something... :(

Thanks everyone.

Yeah her heart was my immediate worry when I read that too. Stay positive, maybe it's a benign growth that's just putting pressure on her chest. I imagine the vet will recommend an x-ray, and maybe an ultrasound after that. That will give you a better idea of what's going on with her.

My Melani had a small fatty tumor on her chest. The vet said it's just a fatty tumor, but then he says "I'm feeling a much larger growth in her abdomen". So the fatty tumor turned out to be a blessing in our case, as it alerted us to the liver tumor.

Come on Shelbey, you can make it! Even if the vet thinks it's bad, don't do anything until you get biopsy results on that growth. Or if they decide to do emergency surgery after seeing the x-ray, that might be the thing to do. Either way they'll likely want to keep her in the hospital on fluids for the next few days. It's a tough thing for your family, but it would probably be best for her to be on fluids and under supervision at this time.

update: Mom just called and the vet said it seems like she had a small stroke or TIA (think that's what she called it). But the dog had a temp of almost 106 degrees. Also, she was salivating thick saliva....so everything points in the direction of a small stroke. They are keeping her over the weekend at the vet's office and she is on close watch. They said she could go into a full-blown stroke and die if not kept a close watch on. So, they gave her stuff to drop her temperature and started her on antibiotics (I think through an IV).

I just feel awful for my mom. She loves our dogs and we had three big dogs as of August last year. Then we put nala down in august, now Shelbey's having a stroke, and misty is about 15 years old and has severe arthritus and cancer....so it's only a matter of time before she goes. My mom is having a very hard time dealing with losing the dogs.

So, if you're going to pray or send good vibes for anyone, let it be to my mom.

Dogs do have a higher temperature than humans, but 106 is definitely on the high side. I feel for your mom, it's so difficult to go through this stuff. Dogs are so sweet and we love them so much, it makes it very hard to deal with losing them.

I lost Melani's dad Hovden a few years ago, he was 15 1/2 years old. Then her brother Kuna suddenly stopped eating and was diagnosed with two huge liver tumors 6 months later. He was 9 years old and the surgeon called me from the operating room. He said that the dog had two massive growths that looked very bad, and hundreds of smaller ones on his liver and into the gall bladder, etc... He said "I just don't see how we're going to save this dog". He could have tried to remove the growths, but there was no guarantee that he would ever eat again. It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make, but I had them euthanize him while he was under anesthesia on the operating table. I cried for months, and it still tears me up to think about it now.

And now that Melani's growths turned out to be benign, I wonder if Kuna could have been saved. I also blame myself for not bringing him in sooner. It just sucks losing a dog that you love.

Ohhhhh... this is so hard, I know! Our dogs are family members, and they can't tell us what's hurting or wrong. It's good that Shelby will be at the vet's all weekend in case anything happens. ((HUGS))

Mallorie how is she? How are you? Big hug to ALL of you. We lost our Nani last year to a stroke caused by a spike in bp. Hope your pup is doing better. Marcia you're right-they are our family.
