the leo that i found on the ground of ***** is doing very well and she is lightening up and will be shedding soon, but i have noticed she if very odd. She will only eat if i drop mealies and waxies right in fron of her to eat, she doesnt like them from a bowl. and to do this i take everything out of her tank and she runs all around and has a grand old time, but once i put her hides and other tank goodies in she goes in her hide where her UTH is and i do not see her until i take everything out again for dinner the next night. is that ok? my other 3 are out and about and loving life but she just stays right in there forever!

My gecko used to hide all the time when I first got her but now she is becoming used to me alot more and will lay out in the open. Remember geckos are nocturnal so will be sleeping and hiding for most of the day anyway. My gecko has mealworms in a bowl and at first I thought she wasn't eating them but she was, she just did it while I was asleep. Now she has got more used to me she has started eating them during the evening.

how long have you had her? if its not very long she might still be a little scared. All leos are different some are more social and out and about while others are shy and like the comfort of their hides

That's not too unusual. You have only had her a few weeks, so she still needs time to acclimate to her new surroundings (and to you).
It sometimes takes a while for them to get the hang of eating from a bowl.
It's not exactly normal "hunter" behavior :D

i bought those clear glass ashtrays from walmart. it was only like $1.50 and since its clear, they can see movement from the side through the glass which promotes them to walk over and check it out. if they dont think to look in there, they may not know the mealies etc are there. my geckos got the hang of it right away with the clear bowls. plus they are smooth and just shallow enough. maybe try that?

I use these:

They can see the mealies a mile away! :)

kiki won't eat out of a dish, either. i've been dropping mealies in front of her so she can see them. i really like the clear dish idea, though. i just might have to try it!

If you use a dish where they can see the food, they will figure it out.
It can be a bit of a learning curve! :D

It's fairly easy to train them to look in the bowl for food. Just drop a worm in front of them like normal, so they know it's time to eat. Then, drop a worm next to the bowl, where it's still visible, so the go to where the bowl is. Next, drop a worm IN the bowl...repeat if they don't seem to notice the first time. Once they eat a dropped worm from the bowl, do it again right away. Then just put the rest in there and let the gecko do it's thing. You really won't have to do this more then a few nights...they catch on quick.

And you are giving Californians a bad name by making such a complete a$$hole remark. We have a large number of minors on this forum, and I must say that the 13 year olds are a lot classier than you my friend. I'll make sure to tell my friend who is managing the new reptile store in your area that you're a little punk.

This worked for me as well. Also when i have a shy gecko i drop the food item in front of their hide doorway and they snag them up pretty well or you can put a low food dish in the doorway of her hide and see if she will eat out of it that way. Both ways have worked for me. You just have to show them that their is food in the bowl.
