go to a local garden center. Make sure it doesn't have miracle grow in it.

We started using perlite but found it dried out WAY fast. We started using vermiculite and like it much better. It gets kind of spongy and holds water better IMO.

vermiculite has aspestus in it i read about it on beanfarm.com

Perlite(for drainage) ......and.......
Vermiculite(for water retention).........not for the same use.
I called the Hoffman Company about the difference in the two products. They are makers of both. You can probably look on their site for suppliers in your area......... .
No you do not want a plant mix just because it contains perlite....Thats all I could find at our Walmarts here.
No, Vermiculite does not work the same, but you can hatch eggs with it. My opinion is that it will not be as successful.
Yes, Perlite does look dry. That is the purpose. It is a drainage material that lets the water go to the bottom, so the egg is not soaking the bottom and possibly making it soft....it may then allow drainage from the egg.
Vermiculite retains water...yes it will look wet.
In the wild geckos do not wish to lay their eggs in a puddle of water.
They want a damp, but drained area. That is what Perlite does. The water is drained to the bottom, container lid has no holes, humidity stays around the egg but not soaking it.
My support comes from:
Last year with Vermiculite 2 hatchings from 12 eggs. This year after changing to Perlite 10 hatchings from 10 eggs so far. Totally support using Perlite.
Also comes from noting that Albey has lay boxes with vermiculite in them........But he changes to Perlite in his hatch boxes?
The method is very sound when used as per the recipe....................
Take care. Good hatchings to all. HJ
