Hi all

What are the tell tale signs of a "hot gecko" ? Other then showing signs of agression during breeding.

Cheers

Aggression during breeding by a female usually means she is not ovulating and therefore not receptive to the male's advances. It doesn't mean she is a 'hot' gecko. Each gecko had their own distinct character and demeanor, and some are just more aggressive than others.

Besides, studies in 1993 and again 1995 by Drs. Viets and Tousignant dispelled the 'myth' of hot females when they discovered that females incubated at higher temperatures mature sexually much later than most females.

As Marcia said, almost all females will attack when breeding advances are not welcome. We even have a female who was a great breeder for us last year and is ovulating right now but refuses to breed. Not a "hot" female, just grumpy. LOL

So the "hot" female is just a theory?
Basically, yes. Early studies dubbed females incubated at higher temperatures as "hot females" because they were agressive towards males during breeding season, and they were also believed to be sterile. This has been dis-proved, and instead it turns out these 'hot' females actually matured sexually a year or two later. If a female is not ovulating, she will not be receptive to a male.

Marcia-
I know that I have read you posting this info before (maybe it was here-maybe not) but it is such a strong Leo myth that it never hurts to read the correct information again

Thanks for taking the time to bust this myth

Ooops, I was going to say an insanely Tangerine gecko that you must wear sunglasses before seeing the pictures posted by Dan Lubinsky. haha, just kidding, I am glad to see it is a theory that has been disproved.

When a female is ovulating, there will be visible follicles through her abdomen. They will look like pink circles a little larger than a pencil eraser, one in the upper right side and one on the lower left side. Sometimes you need to bend the gecko backwards slightly (and carefully) to put some tension on her tummy to see them.

LOL Shaun. I was thinking the same thing when I read the title of this thread! :main_yes:

Wow. Interesting subject. Good to know that it was proven otherwise!

I agree, as my "hot" females seemed to grow out of it. This IMO does not mean that there is no such thing as a hot female, because they definitely can be affected by high temp incubation, just not as much as we thought.
