What causes some eggs to collapse?

This is the first time for babies in our house.

What would cause eggs to collapse around the time they should hatch and others hatched in the same container?

A lot of the time they will collapse just before they hatch, if they collapse earlier it's usually due to not enough humidity or moisture.

Some of the ones that collapse at hatching time may be about to hatch. Two other causes I have experienced:

--infertile egg that holds up for a long time (very disappointing)
--fetal death
