What would you do if there was a power outage in your home and the heat source for the incubator failed? How long would you have to get the emergency heat provided until the eggs get cold? (like if I was not home) :( How long to heat packs last and won't the extreme fluxuation in temps harm the embryos?? I am so worried about this happening... I am sure it has happened to some of you before.. let me know what results you have had to any similar situation...

I have been lucky enough never to have this happen during the day when I was gone. The 2 times it happened at night: once it was very hot and I kept moving the incubator to different locations in the house where the temp was in the ballpark. The other time the power was out for a short time but for awhile it looked as if it was going to be longer, so I called a neighbor who lived outside the outage zone and was prepared to drive the incubator there. I don't know if wrapping the incubator in a down sleeping bag would do anything. I think there are gadgets that operate by battery that you can attach so if the power goes out the battery runs the heat for a certain amount of time.

Wouldn't you know, the day I posted this there *was* a power outage. I took the incubator over to my friend's house for the day (even though the power came back on a bit later, I had to leave it till the following evening). Of course, the next morning, I had 3 new eggs and I had to walk them over to the incubator.

ha.. you walked them over!! too funny.. well I hope they are all doing fine.. now I have to think of a friends house I can borrow- I would have NEVER thought of that one. I am sitting her pondering about heat packs or battery operated heating pads (and if they exist) and you got it covered.. ;) Nicely done and keep me updated on the eggs :main_yes:

We had the power go out back in February and it was out for about 7 hours. I used the large size hand warmer things. 2 of these kept my hovabator at 88 degrees for the duration of the outage. I also covered the incubater over with a blanket just to make sure the heat stayed in there.
