What Now?

Hello everyone, I'm a bit new here, and have owned 2 leopard geckos for 4 years. I was fortunate enough to come into a large 50+ gallon tank, which, to my surprise, came free with several props and decorative items. I wanted to know what some reptile keepers (Novice to Advanced) think would be a great pet to be kept in a big tank like that. My first thoughts were: A. Ball Python B. Corn Snake C. Crested Gecko. I can already cross off a crested gecko, as that tank is nowhere near as tall as it should be for a tropical reptile. The tank is 4 ft long, so that led me to lean with getting a snake, I want to know what type of snake is best for a beginner snake keeper, in YOUR opinion. Please note, I in no way consider myself near "advanced" or anything above beginner, please have your suggestions appropriate with my skill level. I am looking for a pet that doesn't need to be constantly fed, and only needs to be checked on a maximum of six times a day. My apologies if this is in the wrong section, I'm new here, so it's all a bit confusing. :main_laugh:

You could definitely do a snake. Ball pythons are a good beginner, as are rosy boas. Corn snakes and other colubrids are okay. I'm just not their biggest fan. Too squirmy and bite quickly as babies.

Look into Blue tongue skinks, or a bearded dragon. Those are both very good lizards to keep and have wonderful personality. You can kiss and cuddle them all you want and they enjoy the attention. I like to bring my Blue tongue skink to shows and reptile events just to educate people on just how awesome these little creatures can be.

Forgive me, I also should have noted that my terrarium has a screen roof top! Evidently I'm not supposed to keep rosy boas in there, but I am scrimping money to afford a higher quality new one. (I don't know how the collectors do it, lol)

Yeah I would get a blue tongue skink then or a beardie. They would be best for that type of setup/ The less costly lizard would be the Blue tongue skinks seeing as I feed mine Bearded dragon pellets and wet dog food. You can feed them a lot of other stuff and they reaaaally like bananas. XD

Hi all! A lot has happened between the time I first posted and now. Due to luck, per se, I now am the proud owner of two young sulcata tortoises who, both are very adventurous and sweet and were received from a friend who could not care for them, as they are, of course, going to grow. I am now preparing to house a baby corn snake, and am looking forward to the experience. I'm sorry for not taking most of your suggestions, but, believe it or not, Repticon Phoenix has absolutely 0 BTSs, and I don't want a beardie simply because I know significantly less about their care than a corn snake, and I would rather keep an adult than a baby. As you may know, adults cost a lot more than the babies. I'm sure that someday in the future the possibility of me owning a beardie will grow, but first, I want to learn about the other reptile and herp species. Again, thank you all for your suggestions, but ball pythons, boas, skinks, and some healthy beardies cost more than a baby corn, added to my constant studies of corn snakes, I just found them to be the superior option for me.
