hi, i am still fairly new to leopard geckos, but am babysitting some geckos over the summer.
First of all ill give you some background. These geckos are school geckos, meaning somebody didn't want them and dumped them off on the school animal science department. Only problem is they don't have proper conditions. They are on crushed walnut, have 2 hides for 3 geckos, and 1 hide for 1 gecko ( in a differnent tank), they use basking lights for bearded dragons and the female geckos are an estimated 25grams and having infertile eggs:(:main_angry:. Once i found out i brought calcium and mealworms ( they hadn't been fed their usually crickets for about 2 weeks). So i decided to take care of them over summer break, one problem i have is i believe there is a really good chance they have some type of parasite but am not sure so i dont want them close to my other geckos, but my gecko room is very restriced and the farthest i can get them from each other is about 10 feet, would parasites transfer if i use differnt utesils and sanitized before and after contact? I will be replacing the walnut with slate and the light with a heat mat and will add a termometer. What size and brand heat mat would you recommend for a 40b and a 18x18 exoterra? i dont have alot of money to spend right now, especially for geckos that aren't mine, so i would like the combo to be under $40. Thanks for reading,
Nonamebob:)

What's the dimension of the tank? Ideally you want one that will cover 1/3 of the tank on one side. Exo Terra and Zoo Med are the 2 popular brands for under tank heatpads.

Hi,

Great you're taking care of those poor geckos! :main_thumbsup:
Go to amazon.com and search for "heat mat reptiles." There, you find UTH's much much cheaper than in pet stores.

I use the medium sized ones from zoo med; they are 8x12 inches. Those are meant for 30-40 gallon tanks. You might need the small version to cover 1/3 of your tanks.

Parasites won't travel through the air, so your other geckos should be fine. Parasites do contaminate water (and crickets can carry them), so just don't use the same water/food bowls/dishes, don't wash them in the same water, and don't catch escaped crickets from the school geckos' tanks and put them in your own geckos' tanks.

Those school leos will have a great summer break :main_yes: Once they get back, maybe you can introduce proper husbandry there :main_thumbsup:
