I voted heat cable. No headaches trying to troubleshoot why the flexwatt isn't working. The 6 hours on Sunday is what changed my way of thinking. Before Sunday I would have voted flexwatt.
I use both, and will always use both, because heat tape is perfect for shelves/wood racks, and the cable can be used in sooo many ways, even inside the cage, plus it's fool-proof. Overall, as the most user-friendly heating product, I'd have to go with the cable.
Having used or currently using both, I would agree with most that the heat cable is easier and that the flexwatt is more efficient on shelves etc. I will use either, however, I have to mention that if you have your racks in a room that falls to below or around 70 degrees and your heat cable is forced to be on at full power for most of the time (in the winter time for example), be prepared that the life of the cable will be shortened and for possibility of the insulation to melt and potentially cause a fire. I had a cable burn a hole into the insulation before it died and it almost melted the back of one of my AP racks. I got lucky and have thought of converting it to FlexWatt, but the connections on the Flex Watt do not exactly give me a warm fuzzy feeling all the time either. I voted for neither, because I wish for enough cash to purchase Radiant Heat panels and be done with cables and heatr tape eventually
This is a good thread, since so many people have so many different opinions on this. It's nice to get everyone's thoughts and opinions. :main_yes:
Antonio, I've been using the same. I have the 6" x 47" Ultratherms on my rack. They work VERY well, but I'm thinking another route may be cheaper for my next rack (the Ultratherm UTHs were about $180 for the one rack). Also, the 6" width is perfect for my 48"t x 48"l x 24"w rack, but going to be too wide for my hatchling rack, so........
