They cannot bite, they are fairly slow, except for the Males.. I made a post a while back called "Getting down and dirty" that has some pictures :) I also breed them incase you need anymore information.

ive had a colony for 3 years thats about to hit critical mass :). time to split it.
i started with 500 and have something in the range of 10k now, prolific bastids.

ive never been bit, but they can and do 'musk' you sometimes when picked up (the adult males atleast)

what kind of roach are we talking about? i have dubia roachs and they are great! very easy to care for and they get big!( great for my larger tarantulas!) and their young are the perfect size for just about anything! i keep mine in my room in a 10 gallon tank with all sides coverd so its dark. they dont smell, make very little noise, and have alot more "meat" than criks!! there are many different kinds so find one that will work for you! try this to help ya! http://www.aaronpauling.com/roaches/products.php it shows several different kinds

We started out with only buying 125 dubia roaches as feeders. We're still working on the 125, but we are planning to start a colony.
They are a more expensive feeder, but oh MAN! do my geckos go CRAZY for them. ESPECIALLY the males because the males DO move faster, at least that's what I've noticed.

We have 3 geckos upstairs and 4 downstairs. The 4 downstairs are in the same cage. The 4 downstairs will eat anything that MOVES.
We have escape proof dishes that our roach supplier gave us with our order. We put the roaches in their cage, let them run, and let the geckos hunt and eat them. But we find the females are easiest to contain by being put into the escape proof dish. I say that because the females are slowest and will stop suddenly (the roaches are kind of smart) and then the geckos lose interest or sight of them. If we put them into the dishes, they will go like crazy for a while trying to get out, the geckos see the movement, and snag them up!

I have one gecko upstairs that will eat the dubias. And I believe that's because that's what his breeder was feeding him. My two females upstairs don't "get" them yet, so i have to feed crickets to those two.

I find roach poops stink less (mealie poops STINK SO BADLY), and my husband says the roaches are cleaner feeling when he picks them up compared to crickets.

They do, however, like to stick to your fingers when you go to release them. They'll use their little roach legs (EWEWEWEW) to try to cling to your fingers.

But they don't bite, don't stink, and you can leave them in your gecko's cage for as long as you need to.

If your gecko has never had roaches before, he/she might not be crazy about them at first, but like me, don't give up.

If you are planning on starting a dubia colony, and if you use a rubbermaid/sterilite container, they won't be able to get out because dubias cannot climb smooth surfaces.
The only way one should be able to escape is if you drop it and it hauls butt to a hiding spot.
