Why breed strange-looking geckos?

After looking through this part of foum, I've found many rather un-natural looking geckos. White, pink and just plain weird.

So I'm wondering why breed them? Do people really think they look, uh... Pretty? Or do they just want challenges and achievements? Or do they just want to show off?

I'm genuinely wondering why would someone try so hard to get (mostly) creepy-looking creatures?

Perhaps out of curiosity? Maybe some do it as an art, kind of like how some people use unusual colors for fonts?

So it's basically like hobby of some sort?

hmmm Well, maybe perhaps I'm not in the norm, but I think the "white" geckos are very pretty. I'd love to own a Blizzard or SS Blizzard someday. I don't think they're weird looking at all?

And I've never seen a pink gecko? Have you? hmmm
I've seen pink hatchlings but they never stay that color.

I'm still new to all of this, having only owned a leopard gecko for a year now, but I've yet to see a leopard gecko I thought was weird looking. They are all very nice looking, and the higher $$ ones are some of the best looking. Now you can't tell me an Enigma is "weird" looking?!

sorry but that blue is giving me a headache but to the topic, what looks good to you may not be what looks good to others. Just becaue you think its creepy looking doesn't mean everyone else does, its a matter of opinion and taste and that varies form person to person not just with reptiles and their looks but about everything.

May be not weird, but kind of unnatural. I rather imagine a leo to be, well, more... Yellowish? If I didn't know better, I wouldn't even think the pictures are real. Think of human with greenish skin for example.

I'm sure I saw one in this forum not long ago. May be it WAS hatchling, but I'll go check.

I'm not saying they're ugly, just not the kind I'd really imagine a pure leopard gecko to be. Yellow with some black/purple/pink, you know?

After all, I've yet to see someone cross-breed dogs to get spotty poodle with red fur.

Sorry for hard-to-read color. I just like my posts to be special.

All we can say is it matters on the person. Personally I think you are trying to open up a can of worms.
May be, I just still can't see why make them breed for something special. :main_no:

who said anyone MADE them do anything, genetic mutations pop up from breeding 2 of anything that look different.

Do you look exactly like your mom or dad, NO becuase you have part of each of their genetics that makes you look like you.

Please troll elsewhere!

Hey, do me a favor. Don't sign up on a "gecko forum" and then question everyone's motives on breeding. We all have our own likes and dislikes, but the bottom line is the fact that we all love and enjoy this hobby. Sure you may not get, but don't poke around at the folks here just because things don't looks the way you envision them.

You are opening a big can of worms here, and I think it would be best for you to just drop this discussion all together.

Basiclly we the human are a curious speices and if we get somthing that not the norm.We like to know how it works and like to know what we can do with it.And how we can tame mother nature to are way of thinking. It's just something we have always done. That's how we got the meny breeds of (dogs,cats,cattle,rabbits,sheep,mice,rats,FISH-koi'goldfish'etc,BIRDS-chickens,pigions'etc) that most don't look any thing like there wild ancesters.

Thats my two cent anyway.

I swore not to post here any more, but here's finally the kind of post that was actually needed. Guess that explains it, thanks Gazz :)

I breed "pink" hatchling because I can , and I find them to be amazingly beautiful. People line breed dogs for size, color, leg length, coat length... That's how toy breeds, giant breeds, clumber spaniels, american hairless spaniels, red dobermans...... all were made.

I find alot of the average "normal" leopard geckos to be mundane looking and also find some of the higher end genetic crosses to not be to my liking. To shun one for producing healthy abnormal appearing animals isn't cool in my opinion, as my belief is different strokes for different folks.

Having an opinion is always good, but sometimes that opinion needs to be worded correctly as to not come off as a "bad guy"

BTW... Estonia is near Russia along the baltic sea. As already shown ;)

Estonia is bordered to the east by Russia.

I was going to post that humans make a choice to selectively choose genetic outcomes in their children. Most people are initially attracted to their partner by hair and eye color, height, weight, intelligence, etc. And just like in leopard geckos, some people don't dip deep enough into the gene pool and end up with genetically defective children. I wasn't sure if it would be taken the wrong way though. The point is, people are attracted to all kinds of people. Why would they not be attracted to all types of leopard gecko morphs.

Not yet, but how do You think every single Breed of dog, with the exception of a few wild species (Wolf) came to be? They were all made by breeding for desired characteristics.
