Why Buy a Nocturnal Pet?

Something hit me as I was lying sick in bed yesterday. In the past every time I heard someone saying they were going to buy a hamster I would always tell them..."Why not buy a gerbil? Very similar pet and a hamster is nocturnal so you won't be able to see him playing while you're awake."

Now I'm getting ready to purchase a leopard gecko - a nocturnal pet. Am I a hyprocrite?

So as to be the 'devil's advocate'...why purchase a nocturnal pet?

I'm still going to be buying one soon but I'd love to hear your best reasons as to why someone should buy a noctural pet (specifically a leopard gecko).

Thanks.

Because when they are sleeping in the middle of the day they're so cute with their little feet all curled up and looking so relaxed and peaceful.

Also I find my boy tends to be not just nocturnal but crepuscular as well, so It can be around 10 am or 7 pm and he'll still be active. This makes him the perfect guy for me because he'll be up and about in the morning before my classes, I'm out all day, and then I come back and in a few hours he's awake and active.

Well the bonus of a nocturnal reptile is that they don't need the UVB light- which is an expensive pain in the butt. They're not exclusively nocturnal, either- most of my guys are crawling about right now and it's 10am.

my leos are soooo cute to watch when they are asleep.
and they are up from about 4 in the afternoon till i go to bed at 10, and even after i go to bed i can hear them, they seem to adjust their schedules so they can see you (or at least thats what i like to think :p)

Also, hamsters are really loud at night since you can hear them running around in their wheel. Although geckos are noctural, mine still comes out during the day for me to handle and whatnot, and if they want to sleep during the day and play at night, they barely make any noise.

good luck on getting one :)

I work during the day (as I'm sure most people do) and I like being able to come home when the little fellas are just starting their day

I've wondered that too. I have this cool hid though that you put up against the flass of thet tank, and you can see your gecko(s) in there sleeping.

I'm not always at home during the day. My leos wake up around 6:30pm and I go to bed aroung 12, so we have about 5-6 hours happy time every day~
