Okay, I know this may be a weird question... but Why do people temp sex eggs while in the incubator? And for that matter how do you guess what is what? Is it based on egg size?

It depends on the temperature you cook them at. You can basically try for a male or a female just by the temperature you set the cooker at.

I go 80 for female, and 88 for male.

Jessie, the gender of a leoprd gecko is determined by it's egg incubation temperature. Eggs incubated at 80 degrees will be female, and eggs incubated at 90 degrees will be male. Any temperatures in between will give you a different ratio of male and female offspring.

The reason why you might want to have either only female or only male hatchlings: males have to be housed separately, because they will fight and might kill each other. If you don't have a whole lot of cages, I would incubate for female, because you can house many together. Males seem to get higher prices, though; in case you plan on selling your babies...

Also, males hatch much sooner because of the higher temperatures. You might have to wait two and a half months for females to hatch. Mine hatch around the 65th day of incubation (incubated at 82F for female). If you're not very patient, that is a LOOOONG time!!!

So it's up to you to decide if and how you play God :)
