After all the Reptiles Magazine publicity (and the raffle, which I entered but didn't wiin), I got interested in the Steppe runners and bought a pair at the end of Sept. Here's why I like them, even though they don't allow handling:

--They're out during the day and not hidden all the time like my day geckos

--The terrain always changes with them because of their digging

--They're ferocious with crickets and can clean out a bowl of mealworms in no time

--They're a study in shades of gray, kind of like having a black and white photograph in the middle of all the color photographs

--They look like little dinosaurs.

I think they can be tame and if they're in a fairly empty cage they could get accustomed to being handled (yes, there are all those stories of steppe runners sleeping in your hand). However, my cage has a coco fiber substrate and a bunch of cork bark slabs. When I tried to handle them, they just ran from under one slab to under the other. It's not worth it to me to keep chasing them around. At least now when they're basking they don't hide every time they see me. I'll take some pictures at some point and post them.
