i was just wonderin if u can use a uth without a thermostat because all of mine are on/off thermostats and i think there rubbish so as long as the uth is the right temp without the thermostat do u think it will overheat?

In my opinion (others may differ), if you can get a consistent steady temperature that's safe for the geckos with your UTH on full power then you wouldn't need a thermostat. I have been able to achieve this in the set-ups I sell by using a slightly small UTH with ceramic tile substrate.

theres no low medium or high settings on the uth it just plugs in and 2bh in think the on/off thermostats are a complete waste of money not sure about the pulse one tho

what are you using for your thermostat?

I am running 8w exo-terra heat mats and if I leave my mats unregulated they go above 115F.

I used the Zoo Med 500R thermostat and had no problems with it, except when the seasons changed I had to adjust the dial a little. I now use Rancos and they are keeping my mats nicely at 93F. I use a differential of 5 degrees, and the mat's temp moves only 2 degrees.

Thermometers that I use and they only vary by 0.5 - 1 difference of each other. I do not think that I have 7 malfunctioning thermometers. Some time this year I think that I may invest in an IR thermometer.
  • Springfield digital x 1
  • Exo-terra x 2
  • Zilla Thermometer/Hydrometer x 1
  • La Crosse x 1
  • Zoo Med analog Thermometer/Hydrometer x 1
  • Fluker's digital Thermometer/Hydrometer x 1

Well, i'm using uth in both of my tanks. don't use thermostat though. Just digital termomether. temp is around 90F all the time. we are having high temps actually as summer is beggining, so naturally air temp is high too. my geckos look just fine. it's very odd to find somebody who uses a thermostat here....

I do fine with an inexpensive on/off thermostat. If you're considering using no thermostat, it seems that the on'/off kind would be a step up from that.

Another option is to use a light dimmer. I recently bought the cheapest one I could find at the local hardware store for $6. Of course you would have to do the wiring.

Remember that the ambient temp. also dictates the uth temp.
