Sorry for the triple post, but this is worthy of it. I figured out why my uth wasn't heating up. My tank has a plastic base, and because of that base, my uth wasn't even touching the glass bottom. I reinstalled my 2 UTH's and almost immediately the floor was heating up. I put two thermometers. I have my hottest uth on the far left, another with less wattage near it, and no uth on the far right. Here are some pictures of my process and afterwards. If one of the UTH's gets too hot, I'm going to unplug it. Here are the pictures:

FYI, the old guy hands are my grandpas, not mine. He came up with the cardboard insulation idea. Also, the cardboard piece on the top is just keeping warm air in.

if your heating pad gets too hot u need a thermostat to control the temps

After waiting a while and checking after everything was done heating up, the hot side (left side) was 96, the warm side (middle) was 87 and I don't have a reading in the cold side (right side) yet. Should I unplug the middle so at night it is cooler?

u just need one warm end and a cool end.u should have the heat mat on 1/3 of the enclosure and thats it.So u have a heat gradiant from 95 deg to room temperature on the other end.u only need 1 heat pad on one 1/3 of the tank.

Exactly what Roger said. You don't want to have TWO heat spots only one. So choose 'one' side to have your heat spot on and have the heat pad on that side. I have the zoomed heat pad you have...only one they carry at my stores.

Dunno if it's just me...but will the cardboard get hot enough to start a fire? I'm always so worried about that.

OH! And you don't need to unplug your heat stuff at night, keep everything plugged in :)

Got a laugh out of "the old guys hands aren't mine" lol

Hope this helped!

So I unplugged the middle uth, and when it died down I checked the temps. The left was 100, the right was 60. Should I plug the other uth back in?

first off what method are u using to record the temps. u need a thermostat to control your warm end.100 is a little warm.60 on the cool end?.That means the room where your enclosure is in is 60 degrees.Thats too cold for your leo on the cool end.u want it around 70-72Why is your ambient temp in your room that cold? Can u not warm your room up a little ?
