Well, geckos normally wave their tails about when they are unsure of something or want to show dominance. My Tiamat does it all the time when something surprises her, when I hold my other gecko up to her tank, or when she's not sure about something - like when I got a new hide for her. Perhaps something startled your gecko like a loud noise or something? Granted I've never heard of a gecko waving their tail so hard that it would cause noise. Perhaps your gecko just wanted to make some noise? :p
