What do you guys use? I am looking to use something besides crickets? Anyone ever try butterworms. Lets talk about how good different feeders have worked.

things I've tried

I started on crickets and consider them as my main food source. I keep a couple of dozen mealworms in the fridge as I sometimes run out of crickets--I buy a dozen or two at a time and seem to have a 25% mortality rate after about a week or so. I've tried a superworm but once the head was bitten off there was little interest. Last night I acquired a live pinky mouse from the pet store and I'll never do that again simply because the little mouse just sat in the cage and seemed to be slowly dying...it didn't seem fair.
(upon review of this post let me clarify--it is my gecko that is doing the eating, not me...I have not yet eaten bugs.)

Ha I had friends who ate dried mealworms with cheese powder on them, adn dried crickets with sour cream powder on them. But yeah i am thinking about trying phoenix worms now.

I use mealies, supers, roaches, AND crickets.
Those are my main staples for my geckos.
I have two females who won't eat anything other than crickets and supers.
I have a male that will eat whatever.
And I have a crestie who won't eat anything but his CGD and baby crickets.
And one of my female leos has to have supers for now.

so I HAVE TO keep all of these at my house.

I am feeding mostly mealworms right now. I am the process of breeding Dubias and I have enough to feed them every once in a while, but not enough for them to eat all the time. I can't wait to start feeding those more. My leos really like them, even my hatchlings go nuts for them.

Crickets, mealworms and phoenix worms are always in our house. Most of the leos LOVE the phoenix worms.

I've been feeding mealworms for the most part but have just received around a 100 Dubias :) ... They seem to NEVER be rejected ... Next I'm going to try silkworms and if they work out I'll do a mix of silkies and roaches, depending how things go.

In my apartment with a roomie.
Never had crix rejected at my place and feeding mostly roaches at the moment. Supp with crix every now and then but I may favor them for a while as my dubia colony grows. Things on the list of "This would be fun to try" are:
Silkworms (I like your thinking on that roach/silkie mix Liz)
Butterworms
Phoenixworms
Hornworms
Locusts
Jumping spiders
Oh! and Moths!!!

My main staples are mealworms and dubias. I've recently added silkworms every week, too. I've used butterworms. I keep them for some picky eaters, but I don't get them often because of the price. I also feed a little bit of waxworms. I like to give them a variety of foods. I don't like crickets or superworms or I'd feed them, too. They both gross me out!

I feed crickets and meal worms. I buy my crix 200 at a time and they last about a week with only losing about 30 of them. I also go through about 500 mealies a week. Its hard to find live supers around here and being in Florida, I can't get roaches.

On Sundays, they each get one wax worm.

I've had roasted ants, deep fried crickets and a multitude of bugs/grubs while in survival school.

P.worms are really not worth the hype that goes with them. They are gross little maggots that stink and wiggle. Only my babies will eat them, the adults literally spit them out of their mouth. Plus they are tiny and don't get much bigger than they come, and then there is the fly issue. Yes they turn into flies eventually!! If you want to try maggots out without paying, harvest your own. Set some meat out(just a can of tuna will do) and let it get rotten in the hot sun. Eventually you will get flies swarming on it and laying eggs. Then move it to a cooler place out of the sun like a garage. Check on the meat the next day and you should have maggots. Then wet down some oat bran and gut load them on that. Voila! you have your own maggots except they are probably from a house fly and not the Blowfly which is where P.worms come from. Hope that helps!

I have to say that is something I would NEVER try and feed to my geckos. :main_thumbsdown:

I always have mealworms in the house, one of my geckos will ONLY eat them. well, I have to hand feed her those too. To everyone else I also offer crickets twice a week. But other than that, I sometimes feed silkworms, phenoxworms, goliath worms, superworms, and waxworms rarely, I really want to try roaches. but jumping spiders and maggets won't ever be on the menu for my geckos!

I use primarily supers but I throw some mealies in if we have some in the house.
