Silkworms

Silkworms are unique in that Bombyx morii the latin name for silkworms arerthe only species totally dependent on man for their survival as a species they do not exist in the wild. They have been bred for several thousand years in captivity and cant even fly and are fairly stupid in that if they arent in dorect contact with food they can starve because they cant find it. Over the millenia several mutations have occured but they are all the same species. The same way that all the different shaoes and colors of goldfish are all the same species just mutated. Silkworms are also bred that have different colored silk such as yellow and pink and tan.

Zebra silkworms there are a couple of forms even of them. The most common one in the hobby is the sexually dimorphic zebra where the males stay white and the females get the stripes. The advantage to that is when it comes time to choose breeding stoock you can pick the biggst and healthiest worms of either sex to allow to pupate and breed.
