I rescued Babe about 6 months ago. She did not have a good life for her first ten years. She was never handled, kept on sand, poop everywhere, and they would just stick a mini box of crickets in her cage occasionally. Amazingly, she was in pretty good condition.

She is a pretty good eater but sometimes goes a week or two where she stops eating. She had gone two weeks without eating and then I noticed that her eye looked funny. I brought her to the vet last Wednesday and he said she had conjunctivitis of her inner eyelid. The inside corner was red and swollen. He gave me antibiotic drops to use (they have only helped a little). he also gave her a shot of some vitamin A & D to stimulate her appetite. That seemed to work because on Saturday, she ate about 10 worms.

She is kept in a tank in my bedroom, where my cats are not allowed. But on Sunday, my husband didn't notice that one cat snuck in when he wasn't looking. She was in there for about 15 minutes before he realized. That night I saw that Babe had a couple of scratches on her but they didn't look deep. I cleaned them and put neosporin on. But last night, I noticed that her arm and hand were swollen and she wasn't walking right. So, I brought her back to the vet again today. He gave her a shot of antibiotics and sent me home with needles and more doses to give her every 48 hours for 10 days.

She is in the middle of a really slow shed (started yesterday and about halfway done). As the skin is coming off of the scratches, it kind of smells bad, like rotting flesh. She is acting very, very lethargic. She is also staying on the cool side most of the time.

I just was hoping for some comments and advice. Also, the vet is a reptile specialist who I trust very much. I have taken my beardie there for years. Thanks!

Because the cats are never allowed in that room, there is no lid on the tank. My husband didn't see the cat sneak in when he went in to grab something. He then saw the cat next time he went in the room again, about 15 minutes later.

But anyway, Babe just died while I was holding her. It was terrible.

At least I gave her a good last 6 months of her life, as opposed to the first terrible 10 years. I'm sobbing...:(

Thank you so much. The lesson to learn from this is that IF any lizard gets a wound from a cat, get it to a vet immediately. Do not wait a couple days. Cat scratches make nasty infections and this one killed her within 3 days.

For starters cats have a decent amount of bactera on their claws, ever noticed when you get scratched the area gets a little swollen/the scatrch marks may itch? May have been what caused the swelling, then you have the fact that she was 11, i know some females live longer but that is a older age for females from what i hear. She may not have been able to handle the stress. Finnaly its possible she suffered internal injury, the cat may have done more then just scratched her. Let this be a lesson about lids and animals, ANYTHING you dont want your cat to get into your almost garunteed it will.

EDIT: was going to answer this a while ago but got sidetracked, i see you already knew about the infectious nature of cat scratchs.

Im so sorry for your loss. I am glad you were able to give her a good last 6 months.

However, next time I would get a lid with clamps/locks. They dont cost that much and important to protect your animals. Even if the cats arent allowed in the room they always seem to end up where they are not supposed to.
