_____gecko care

I'm posting this after realizing how many times I've responded to posts asking "tell me all about how to take care of a ______ gecko". I'm hoping that the title will make it easy to find this if someone does a search. I really don't think that most people who ask this question are lazy; I think that either the search function didn't work for them (it's very easy to get either no hits or so many that it's overwhelming if the search terms aren't just right) or they don't realize that care cannot be summed up in a paragraph (by contrast, I **think** I could write up cat or dog care in a paragraph, mostly because they don't need an enclosure). So I'm listing below what I usually tell people in the hopes that they will find this post (and spare us some typing) and also that GF will be able to have another forum which consists only of caresheets (I'll post that in "suggestions"):

Dear interested gecko keeper,

If you want to know how to care for a _____ gecko that you are contemplating purchasing (and hopefully have not already purchased), please try the following:

--Go to the search function and also to google and type in "______ gecko" care. Read a bunch of caresheets. The information that keeps repeating is probably the right information

--Read the "general care" sections of this forum, or, if it's not a leo, read the sections on the other types of geckos

--if your gecko is not a leo, you can also check out some other forums: geckosunlimited.com, phelsumaweb.com (for day geckos)

--after you've gotten a basic idea about care, come back to this forum and ask the following types of questions:

-contradictions from other caresheets that you can't resolve
-specific questions about equipment
-specific questions that occur to you that haven't been covered
in the caresheets
-instructions that you don't understand, or that don't make sense to you

Using this method would get you quality information and encourage more experienced GF members to respond to your questions.

thank you I have been noticing that a lot of the more experiance GF members haven't been responding much to these types of stuff (I'm sure its because it is getting old, like it is to me) but it also means that newbies are giving answers to other newbies and a lot of times it is the wrong information.

Hey 2bacop where do you get your leos in VA

Well mine that I have right now came from my work which is a big chain store, but i nursed it back to health because it was deadly ill and skinny when it came in. My new gecko is coming from Chris Smith (yellermelon) who is in SC.

SEARCH HELP IMPOSSIBLE

ALiza, you have the right idea
but you (as I) are wasting our time without a better search
software installed. Too many common words are pulled
up in the searches making it discouraging for anyone to use it.
I have been testing ways to overcome the method
but not much can be done with out changes and controls
placed on certain words for the title line.........
For instance try searching this useful informative thread
you wrote..........see what pulls up even in a advanced
search on the title for threads only.
...........
think where it will be as your date of writing gets aged.
HELP is a word left unmatchable.....I have
inquired about it because I feel GOOD search results
could be obtained if it were unlocked and controls for the
use placed on HELP to be given out to threads like
yours and some of mine that STICKIES seem not to be
available to........I refuse to rewrite over and over the
same, what I think is good advice, as I'm sure you and
many others have done too.
Take care. HJ

Searches/Success

Yes Rick, I had read your thread.
Very worthy comments.
I guess we need to keep in mind there are two things
involved....successful searches VS successful forum activity,
That's made up of numbers from a community of friendships and
conversation about the shared interest.
No numbers, no forum success.
You take care. HJ

Here is an idea...
If someone asks a question, just answer it... Its pretty easy to answer questions if you know what you are talking about...

That works too, but some of the questions are way too general, like "tell me what I need to know about breeding/housing/feeding." Of course, the simplest thing is for people who feel like answering these general questions (which need more than a 5-sentence paragraph) over and over to do it. Eventually people may get tired of this and newcomers' questions won't get answered. Then they get mad because they're being ignored. It could also be a good idea to try to educate people about doing a little research in advance before asking for a brain dump. If we had a caresheet section, we could just direct people there. Not disagreeing with you, just explaining my perspective a little more.

A few Good

So true Gregg, but did you ever have the feeling
your knowledgeable answer was not used or even read,
because posts by the tread starter pointed to agreement to an answer
more along their likens than reasonable...
Or did you ever maybe fail to respond with that better answer
due to the fact you had posted that answer numerous times?..
If someone wanted good answers to their question I think
by now many of us could say with confidence, search Gregg Madden's
posts.
But you are right...an answer, no more. is much less flustrating
than writing a knowledgeable thread that is never seen
or near impossible to find with a troubled search engine.
Take care. HJ

As someone who is new to the world of geckos, I try to ask my husband questions before posting here.
He has read all the books, and has been into geckos for a while. But after coming here, and doing research online, and skimming through books on my own, he still does things that I don't agree with.
SO, I may find myself asking questions here.

Honestly? I've used the search function SEVERAL times since I joined here. I spend most of my time here reading. Only after I've searched to no avail, then I may post a thread.

I often bump old threads that have the info I need to know, just so it stays where I can find it, because god only knows if my next search will render the same results!:main_laugh:

I hope this isn't a forum full of members that get annoyed by old threads being bumped.

I don't think people here get annoyed about old threads showing up again. Here's another suggestion that I used when I started researching breeding (not limited to that topic though): I started a word processing document and whenever I found things on the forums that I wanted to remember, I would cut and paste the text. Eventually I had a great document with all the stuff I wanted to know in one place.

Questions/Answers.....hey, that's what the forum is for.
Just wish searching for everyone was not "to no avail."
as it was for you and many others.
Welcome, good gecko-ing.
Take care. HJ

Thanks!
No, what I meant was: I use the search function and ONLY when I've searched to no avail on a subject, THAT is when I make a thread and ask a question.:D
