hey guys, i have had some questions but yesterday the forum wasnt working :( BUT anyways.

Question 1.

I got my first leo from a breeder and i do not know how old he is but i do know he is a male and he is about 6 inches. first of all he HATES being woken up. he hisses at me when i try to touch him. I want him to be handled more but when i take him out he isnt very nice. He runs away and tries to hide and i want him to be come more tame. what are some things i can do?

Question 2

I just got a female 3 days ago, shes from ***** but i had to get her, she looked so sad and I knew i could give her a nice home. Last night i tried putting her in the males tank ( he has a 20L at home and a 15 at school) and he woke right up and started following her around and licking her. she didnt like it much and shook her tail a few times but then when he wouldnt leave her alone and i saw him shake his tail so much that it vibrated, i grabbed her RIGHT out and she went back to her home and had some dinner and a drink:main_rolleyes: . do you think he is just too big and shes smaller or does he always have to be alone now?

Question 3

I am getting 2 leos from someone on craigslist that said if i didnt come and get them this weekend they were going to kill them:furious: so i have no choice I am getting them. one is said to be male and the other said to be female. i want to put them both together when i get them...does this seem like not a good idea? I live in a dorm and im not allowed to have animals:main_evilgrin: but who listens anyways...so they are all in my room so i was hoping to put them together. what do you think?

Question 1; try to handle himf or a short period of time each evening. if i was nocturnal i wouldn't enjoy being woken up while i was trying to sleep either :) try placing you hand flat at the bottom of his tank so he can get your scent, this may take a while. especially if the breeder you got him from did not handle his geckos very often. but patience. in key

Question 2; you should always quarentine a new gecko for 60days (i think it's 60, mines have permanent seperate tanks) when you get it expecially from a large chainn pet store. there is no telling what the little one might have. that you don't want your others to get. and if the new little one is smaller than your male. that's another good reason not to put them together. he may bully/hurt the little one and take all of the food.

Question 3; if you MUST get these two geckos. then they also should not go in with either of your other two for the reasons metioned above. two males will fight. and if the two you are getting off of craigslist are male and female i'd seperate them as well. unless your prepared to potentally deal with eggs. which living in a dorm i'd guess not ;)

as far as space. you could get some sort of rack system.. that takes up less room than several 10-20 gallon tanks.

hope that helps and good luck ;)

Here is my $.02:

1.) Keep the handling sessions short and increase the time slowly. Hopefully he'll come around and be a little more friendly.

2.) At a MINIMUM, breeding geckos should be 40 grams, and some breeders even recommend 50 grams. The point is, to avoid complications you want to make sure the geckos you're breeding are adult size and healthy enough to live through the demands of breeding. When the male started vibrating his tail, he was trying to court the female.

3.) You should quarantine any newly aquired animal no less than 30 days before introducing them to your existing stock. You don't want to subject the ones you already have to parasites or diseases.

Actually, quarentine is not just having a gecko in a seperate tank. Most, myself included, will even keep their quarentined animals in a different area of their home/business. You also want to make sure you follow good hygine (wash your hands thoroughly) after handeling the new aquisition.

Otherwise, well worded! :main_thumbsup:

I don't know that I would want geckos from anyone who threatens to kill them if I wouldn't take them. That's almost like blackmail.

You shouldn't ever let any any males and females come in contact with each other regardless of size while you're living in a dorm where pets aren't allowed. It only takes a second for them to breed and you're not going to be able to incubate eggs and house babies in your dorm room. Just my 2 cents...

just be sure you are prepared to take care of all these geckos and remember its always safer to house your geckos alone you can monitor their eating and dont have to worry about dominacnce or fighting. also make sure your tanks are setup with UTH and something to control the heat. oh and your male vibrating his tail, thats him already trying to mate the female you put in so becareful always keep them separate

if you cant take care of the other 2 geckos lmk and ill take them... you said they have the tank and all right? if thats the case, maybe you could pick them up *depending on there location* and i could meet up with you somewhere... i dont really have the space, but i know i could make space as ive done multiple times in the past... so with that note... just an option... im located about 30 mins north or auburn.... 2 hours south of bangor... 30 mins from agusta.... 1hr and 15ish mins north of portland... im sure we could meet up somewhere if needed... just lmk :)

other than that... i pretty much agree with what was already said...

woah I was just asking! i have PLENTY of room ...i live in a large room all by myself. I was not asking for 2 cents just asking for advice. I know how to set up tanks I know you need to use UTH's and i know they should be in their own tanks.I asked about the 2 I am recieving because i WANT them to breed. I have been looking for a pair for some time now...its not like I am new to this...and I work at a family owned pet store so I always have access to free whatever I want...including mealworms, UTH's, tanks, ect ect. They were just a few questions i wasnt sure about.

Free supplies wow, I worked at a family pet store for three years and the best I got was supplies at cost. Just be aware of how much more work it is to breed geckos then to own geckos. Do you know if the two you are getting are related? if you keep one male with one female he might over breed her, do you have space for an extra tank if you have to take him out? What will happen if they find out you have animals? Not just to you...but to the animals? Does your boss at the pet store know you are buying geckos from other pet stores? And if you have to get rid of them are they going to be willing to take in the large chain stores, probably sick, rescued gecko? Do you have money to take it to the vet? Is the female big enough to breed (at least 50 grams)? I completely understand the want to breed leos, just a few things you might think about first.

Giving someone who's asking for advise their "2 cents" IS giving advise. When you ask for advise and get advise, try not to be defensive when you get answers you may not like.

Here's MY 2 cents:

1.) Don't wake your gecko up to handle it. Wait until it is out and about, and offer your hand slowly, palm up, until the gecko gets used to your presence. Patience is the key. In a few weeks, your gecko should be calm enough to let you handle it.

2.) ANY newly acquired gecko should be quarantined for a minimum of 30 days, but 90 days is better... especially if you got it from "major pet chain store". Your female should be at least 9-10 months old and around 50 grams before introducing her to a male.

3.) It doesn't sound like you are ready to take on two more geckos.

Sorry, but you ASKED for advise. I gave it. If you have to ask if it's OK to put a female in with your male knowing she is too small and without any quarantine... and if you have to ask 'if it's a good idea to house 2 new geckos together' not knowing what sex they are, then you probably should reconsider adding additional geckos to your collection.

When you ask if it's a good idea to put geckos that haven't been quarantined together to breed in a room where you're not allowed to have animals at all be prepared to hear why people think it's a bad idea. A "but who cares about rules anyway?" attitude would lead many people to believe that you may not be responsible enough to handle everything that comes with breeding.

I brought my geckos to school because they are my responsibility and I am not going to just dump them on some random person because they are not allowed in a dorm. they are fine in here. they have their tanks here...and bigger ones at home. If you had to move, wouldnt you take your babies? I kinda just hurts my feelings and makes me feel like people think I can not take care of my geckos. There may have been some confusion before...The 2 geckos I wanted to put together have been together for years. I am getting them from someone who can not care for them anymore. one is 3 years old and the other 2 1/2 yearsold. they have their own separate tanks thet they are coming with and have been able to see eachother....but have been separated. I put my new lizard with gucci ( my 8 month old ) AFTER she was brought to the vet. Everyone has their own houses here...i know how to care for leos. :(

No one was saying that you couldn't care for your geckos just that it's not a great idea to add more at this moment or breed any of them. And having a male and female together for a even just a second, you run the risk of having them breed.
