A first for me

So what is the longest time it took for a gecko to lay a clutch since coitus? (Big Bang Theory :) ) I had a female who had been with a male about 10 weeks ago and I figure that they just didn't copulate. This didn't bother me as I was trying to keep my numbers low since I am starting a new job as a first year art teacher. I knew my time would be limited and keeping my hatchling numbers low would just be easier on me. The male was only introduced for a couple day span 2 times during the first part of May so I am positive that it's been 10 weeks. I still had a lay box in with her and notice the other day that she was digging but she had done this occasionally over the last 2 months. I thought that maybe she was just trying to get to the moist coco fiber but that was only a guess. I generally always check my geckos once a day no matter if they are laying or not. Today I noticed a pile of coco fiber and decided to investigate further. :main_robin: To my amazement, there were 2 fertile eggs that were just laid today. I just thought that the time frame from when she was introduced to the time she laid her first clutch was just crazy long. It is by far the longer time span that I have had with a laying female. I just wanted to see how long others have had from copulation to laying?

On a side note, can anyone tell me why the magnifying glass face is named Robin? I just noticed this and was curious.

Oh I've seen the show, I don't think I understand your reference? Is it because they use the word coitus?

female leopard geckos can store sperm .. not sure how long tho

They can store sperm for up to a year after being bred. It was just a first for me to have a female lay a set of fertile eggs after 10 weeks of being with a male. She was ovulating when they were introduced so I just find intriguing that it took this long to lay her first clutch. I am interested to see how long others have had a female lay after copulation.

Twelve weeks for me. She ate right up until she laid her eggs!

Wow that was a long time Marcia. Did the first clutch hatch fine? My female ate all the way up til she laid her clutch. The male who bred her was the Male Eclipse I got from you. He is really a gentle lover and doesn't push the females too much so I figured he had just gave up, lol! I guess he just woo'd and whispered the right words to her without me knowing. :p

I would think it was possible that she absorbed her first set of eggs and then laid these fertile ones. I'm not sure how long it's been for mine, but I'm guessing 8-10 weeks.

Your probably right. She hasn't lost any weight really but did seem larger in the belly area during the first month. If she had absorbed her first clutch then I could see it taking 8+ weeks for the second clutch to be ready. It was just the longest I have had to have eggs laid. I guess you do this long enough and you experience unusual things compared to the norm. Now I am just waiting for twins and a 3 egg clutch. :main_laugh:

Gosh 10 weeks and 12 weeks...I just posted a question about my first time girl that hasn't laid in 4-5 weeks, and I'm already pacing in front of her tank. I can't imagine waiting 10+ weeks, I'll probably get white hair all over my head.

My girl isn't digging in her hide at all, but she stopped eating about 3 days ago.

I know Bonnie, it is killer waiting for eggs.

I wasn't too worried about this female as she ate through every bit of the 10 weeks. I bet Kristi is right that my female probably absorbed her first clutch. If your girl just stopped eating, i'd say that she will be laying sometime soon. Fingers crossed for you that she lays soon.
